If you're old enough to have been wearing fragrance in the early 2000s, then you'll know the supreme nostalgia they hold over us.
There's nothing giddier than spotting an old bottle of Victoria's Secret body spray in your friend's house, or passing by a back-table shelf of Ed Hardy perfumes on clearance at your local Priceline. And let's be real – the wearer of each fragrance was distinct. We were devout to our scents, and gave them pride of place on our tween dressers and in our Sportsgirl duffle bags after P.E. lessons. And so, to honour the personality of each fragrance, we thought we'd go through the trouble of assigning the most iconic Y2k perfumes to their appropriate star sign.
Aries: M by Mariah Carey
It only makes sense that our Aries queen Mariah is your olfactory guiding light. You are bold, energetic, charismatic, fun and driven by your hearts and desires – and My by Mariah, with Tahitian Gardenia, sea breeze accord, amber and a hint of marshmallow easily matches your freak.
Taurus: Green Tea by Elizabeth Arden
What's more comforting than a cup of green tea? And as Taurans, you recognise the inherent worth of life's little indulgences. This fragrance is bright and zesty, but not too far out of your comfort zone. As the name implies, it's got a green, earthiness to it that reminds you of your love for the great outdoors. Like a breath of fresh air on a mountain top.
Gemini: Glow by J.Lo
You're multifaceted, but mostly, you're fun. And J.Lo is the patron saint of party-girl energy. Her signature fragrance is soft, sexy, clean and subtle with a mix of soothing vanilla and musk. It's alluring just like you, and will fulfill your dream of smelling like expensive hotel soap.
Cancer: Daisy by Marc Jacobs
Any surprises here? Your whimsical, soft, nature was made for frolicking in daisy fields in this scent – and in your eyes, there's nothing a Lana Del Rey mega-mix, or a spritz of Marc Jacobs Daisy won't cure. It's a sensual mix of white violet, jasmine, morning dew and with a grapefruit sparkle over the top. It's overtly feminine, not too sweet, and very easy to love.
Leo: Paris Hilton by Paris Hilton
Can you believe Paris Hilton is an Aquarius? I couldn't either. I'm simply choosing to believe that she is a Leo and that she made this eponymous, pink-encased fragrance for those born under the same stars. It blends fruity, floral, aquatic, and tropical accords – because why choose when you could have it all?
Virgo: YSL Babydoll
Is there a harder working Y2K scent than YSL's Baby Doll? So hardworking in fact, it was recently placed into retirement (RIP). But before it was laid to rest, it was our old reliable – a fruity, floral fragrance with notes of black currant, rose, Heliotriope, cedar and sandalwood.
Libra: DKNY Be Delicious
Librans are all about balance – the scales. Particularly when it comes to aesthetic harmony. And you just can't go wrong with this stalwart fragrance from Donna Karen. Beginning with refreshing grapefruit and cucumber, undertones of sensual magnolia, and finishing with crisp apple notes on a base of cool, white woods and silken amber, it's practically inoffensive, and the perfect scent for your indecisive demeanour. There's a reason it's one of the few on this list still readily available at chemists and worn to death. It's a timeless classic.
Scorpio: Viva La Juicy by Juicy Couture
No surprises here. Of course Scorpios are donning this iconic fragrance from Juicy Couture. Sultry, sweet, playful – it's the kind of fragrance that held a devout following in most high schools since its launch in 2008. It's captivating and fruity, youthful and fun (but not to be messed with).
Sagittarius: Fantasy by Britney Spears
Miss Spears' iconic perfume is often replicated, but will anything ever live up to the original? It's a lively, passionate scent that, like you, embodies the very essence of the Sagittarian pop princess herself.
Capricorn: Ralph by Ralph Lauren
Preppy and sophisticated, without all the frills and unnecessary bits – Ralph by Ralph Lauren is the Y2K scent of Capricorns. With notes of green apple, musk and pink magnolia, it's an optimistic scent in a practical bottle.
Aquarius: Harajuku Lovers by Gwen Stefani
I refuse to believe every Aquarian in the naughties didn't at least hover around the Gwen Stefani Harajuku Lovers counter in their youth – and as someone born on the cusp, I am included in this list (and a wearer of Gwen's eponymous 'G' iteration). Inspired by her fascination with Japanese street fashion and youth culture, it's quirky, individualistic and imaginative; an Aquarians perfect olfactory match.
Pisces: Vera Wang Princess
Soft, romantic and gentile – Vera Wang's Princess fragrance is about as Piscean as fragrances get. Blending water lily, apple and mandarin meringue it's a sheer, fruity and floral scent suited to your mystical, pleasure-seeking nature.
