Fiji is incredibly nostalgic for me – my parents first went there on their honeymoon 45 years ago before fancy resorts and pool bars existed on the Islands. They loved it so much they took us back there as a family almost every Christmas break for years – driving three kids down dirt roads to remote villages and braving the smoky, clustered towns so we could eat at local restaurants, insisting we have a cultural experience beyond the newly pimped pool bars.

Castaway Island is perfect for kids, so this year we’ll be taking our young son to see about fresh coconuts falling from palms trees, swimming in lagoons at sunset, experiencing traditional ‘lovo’ feasts, and how tech-free zones and the pool bar phenomenon still exist outside of the 80’s.
