What can peppermint oil be used for?
Made by extracting oil from the leaves of peppermint plants, peppermint oil is considered one of the most dynamic essential oils. It's intensely fragrant and the presence of menthol make for a multipurpose remedy.
As you've probably clocked, peppermint oil is most commonly used in dental hygiene routines. You can blend it into homemade mouthwash or toothpaste to freshen your breath.
Dilute it with a carrier oil and peppermint oil can be applied topically. As someone who is prone to migraines, I massage the diluted oil on my temples and the smell alone has been a godsend in calming any nausea. Dab it on your wrists or under your nose to boost your energy and improve alertness. You can also rub it onto your chest, or put some drops into a diffuser or face steamer when you're sick with a cold as the smell will help clear any nasal congestion.
The cooling sensation of peppermint oil is great to combat itchiness from bug bites. Also, it can soothe your aching muscles and relieve inflammation after a workout due to its analgesic, anti-inflammatory properties.
What's more, it makes for a great household staple, be it for cleaning or as a natural measure against pests. Soak cotton balls in peppermint oil and place it in entryways, nooks and crannies, to deter ants, cockroaches and even mice, who will pick up the scent immediately and avoid entering your home. Some research also suggests that peppermint oil can be as effective as DEET in deterring mosquitoes.
