At home LED masks are one of the greatest skin innovations of the last few years. Once reserved for clinics, the tech is now at our disposal from home, and proven to enhance skin health when used consistently. From plumped fine lines to reduced acne, LED light isn't another beauty gimmick; it works, and in my opinion is certainly worth investing in.
But that doesn't mean you can buy anything; some LED masks are better than others — the key is knowing what to look for. It's confusing, so we've listed 11 RUSSH approved options, their stats and exactly where to buy them below.
Where to buy LED masks
There's a lot of LED masks on the market, but they're not all created equal. In order for a device to work, it needs to be of a specific wavelength. They also vary in price, shape, fit and colour, so knowing what you're buying is critical. To help you decipher the best LED masks, you'll find a RUSSH approved edit with all the necessary info below.
Omnilux Contour Face
Omnilux is arguably the original and the best LED light mask. All of their devices are clinically-proven and TGA approved, so you know you're going to see results, pending you're consistent. The Contour Face is made from a bendy silicone, so it's pretty comfortable to wear while being easy to clean. It's best for fine lines, dullness and discolouration.
Stats
- 132 medical-grade LED lights
- Wavelength of 633nm (red) and 830nm (near-infrared)
Omnilux Clear
The Omnilux Clear uses red and blue light to target P.acnes, so it's a better choice for breakout-prone skin. Unlike red and near-infrared, blue light works on the skin's surface to reduce acne-causing bacteria, preventing the formation of pimples while speeding up the healing of existing ones. It treats associated redness, inflammation and oil over-production, as well.
Stats
- 132 medical-grade LED lights
- Wavelength of red 633nm and blue 415nm
Current Body LED Light Therapy Face Mask
The Current Body mask combines three wavelengths for serious anti-ageing benefits. With red, near-infrared and deep near-infrared, it's designed to target deeper wrinkles, lines and texture and dullness.
Stats:
- 236 LED bulbs
- Three wavelengths: red (633nm), near-infrared (830nm) and deep near-infrared (1072nm)
Therabody Theraface LED Mask
This mask is more of a shield, so it doesn't bend as easily around the facial contours (but it's easy to wear and stays put, so you can go hands-free while you're wearing it — it's also cord-free). It has three light settings: red, blue and near-infrared, making it a good all-rounder. It also vibrates slightly for a mini-massage.
Stats:
- 642 LED lights
- Three wavelengths: red, blue and near-infrared (actual wavelengths not available)
Dr. Naomi Let It Glow
Sydney-based cosmetic doctor Naomi has 24 years of experience under her belt, and has managed to combine leading LED technology with her signaure tongue-in-cheek approach to beauty. This LED mask is as good as any: it's made from bendy medical-grade silicone and omits red and near-infrared light at an effective wavelength. The pink exterior is also very cute.
Stats
- 156 LED lights
- Red 630nm +/- 5nm and near-infrared 830nm light wavelengths.
Dr. Naomi BDE Neck Decolletage
If you're interested in targeting fine lines, creases or discolouration around your next and chest, this mask is for you. Because it's made from silicone, it can be moved around to treat the back and shoulders, too. It's a great way to visibly improve the look of sun damage or loose skin, as well.
Stats:
- 114 LED lights
- Red 630nm +/- 5nm and near-infrared 830nm light wavelengths
Boost Lab Multitask LED Light Therapy Face Mask
Interestingly, this mask combines two different settings: a red and near-infrared combination, and a 'pink' setting that combines blue and red light. The former is made to treat skin tone, texture and firmness, while the 'pink' simultaneously targets inflammation and acne.
Stats:
- Red and near-infrared wavelengths: 630 nm, 850 nm
- Pink wavelength (Blue + Red) 460 nm, 630 nm
Foreo UFO 2
This is not your classic LED mask, but it does use LED technology. The device is like a mini facial — you insert a sheet mask and move it over your face while it cycles between LED light, thermo-therapy, cryo-therapy and t-sonic pulsations. Expect brighter skin in two minutes.
Stats:
- Eight full spectrum LED lights
- Hot therapy and cold therapy
MZ Skin Lightmax Supercharged LED Mask 2.0
This mask has a comfortable design, so it's great if you find the silicone ones tricky to wear. It's created by a Hollywood aesthetician Dr. Maryam Zamanai, and includes two light settings: red and infra-red light, as well as red and blue light combined. It's clinically proven to treat fine lines, wrinkles and breakouts.
Stats:
- Two clinically-proven light settings (exact wave lengths not stated on brand website)
Qure Q-Rejuvalite Facewear Pro
This mask connects with the Qure skincare app, so it's easy to track your progress. It's also quick — the treatment time is three minutes — and fitted with five wavelengths to target different areas of concern. You can even customise the settings.
Stats:
- Two wavelength settings, including anti-ageing — 605nm amber, 630nm red, 660nm deep red and 880nm infrared; and anti-breakout treatment — 415nm blue and 630nm red
Foreo FAQ 202 LED Mask
This mask is super lightweight, but still powerful in terms of results. It's wireless, and has eight different wavelengths (including blue, green and near-infrared). Each setting is pre-programmed to ensure you meet your skin goals, whether that's firmer, brighter, clearer or simply more radiant.
Stats:
- 600 points of light (exact wavelengths and colour setting not stated on website)
What is LED light therapy, and how does it work?
LED stands for light emitting diode, and speaks to a non-invasive treatment where light wavelengths penetrate the skin, improving its health on a cellular level. The light acts like an energy source, while different colours target different areas, resulting in different benefits. For example, red LED light is known to boost collagen production, while blue light reduces the occurrence of breakout-causing P.acne bacteria. With regular use, LED light can firm the look of fine lines, improve skin tone, reduce redness or inflammation and prevent breakouts. It has zero downtime, in fact it will immediately leave the skin looking radiant and bright.
