Bouclé - this may be a word that's become something of a staple in your interior search. Seen as a prominent feature over social media over the last few years. The trend has been a focal point of all the top interior styling instagram pages everywhere. With top interior stylists like that of Kelly Wearstler showing how a room can be transformed with a statement piece of its making.
Derived from the French word meaning 'curled' the trend hit prominence in the 1940's. After Frances Knoll requested Eero Saarinen design a chair that she could "curl up in". What followed was the designer interpreting this concept right down to the details of the upholstery. The result? Saarinen’s Womb Chair, which debuted in 1948 in a Classic Bouclé, a raised textile made from a yarn of, none other than curled fibers. Bouclé refers to yarn that's been made from a series of looped fabric, commonly derived from Wool or Cotton. Though Silks and Linen's can also be used with this technique. The Midcentury design became a staple of couture fashion houses, most prominently Chanel.
With the rise of Midcentury furniture making its stylish return, the versatility of Bouclé furniture is what is so appealing. It is both durable and soft, an important combination when it comes to sustainability. The material itself works very well with curvy shapes, making it the perfect key statement in the home.
