We'll admit it: spring and summer are our favourite times of year. We relish in the long sleepy days, lying in the sun, drinking from our condensation-dripped bottles of lemony sparkling water with a book in hand. But alas, of all the warm-weather pastimes, we must ask is there really any simpler pleasure in life like that of fresh linen sheets on a sunny afternoon? If there is, we don't want to know about it.
Our linen prisons are where we intend to spend a good portion of the next six months, and now that we're stripping off those extra layers of fluffy blankets, we might as well use this moment to refresh our beds with some pillowy, fresh sheets. The only problem? Where to find the right ones and how to go about looking for them.
How to choose new bed linen
The aim of the game is to stick with sustainable, quick-drying light linens. During the hotter months, we have the luxury of more daylight hours, so running the dryer isn't so much of a concern thanks to the gift of ample sunshine.
When looking for a bottom sheet, the trick is to look for something both durable and sweat-resistant – after all your body is making contact with it daily, and we want nothing but the best for our skin.
What materials are best for bed linens?
As the weather heats up, vintage washed linen, bamboo linen, and stonewashed cotton all make for lightweight bed sheets that allow for airflow, keeping you nice and cool as you sleep.
There's also considerations when it comes to sustainability. Fabrics such as French flax linen and linen sheets dyed using eco-friendly volcanic rock materials are a great way to remain environmentally conscious, while still having a great night's sleep. Buying repurposed vintage fabrics and organic bamboo-based linens are also conscious choices.
Where to buy bed linen and how much should you spend?
In Australia, we have some amazing, quality bed linen labels right on our doorstep – no need for international shipping. In general, it's a good idea to buy local to be mindful of emissions.
Bed linen sets can range from roughly $150-$600, depending on the the quality you're after, and the size of your bed. We've compiled a list below of where to buy bed linens. Prep for your best night's sleep yet, below.
