Back in 2019 during a time where our (ongoing) obsession with true-crime podcasts had truly hit its peak, a decades-old tale that was quite unlike any we had heard before made its mark on listeners across the globe. Simply titled The Shrink Next Door, the podcast's bizarre and equally addictive plotline instantly shot to viral-sensation status. As is the case for many of the best true-crime podcasts in history; it seems almost criminal to let these thrilling stories die.
That's right, The Shrink Next Door is the latest podcast to be turned into a television series, and the all-star cast is proof alone that Hollywood is taking this retelling seriously. The series has found a home on Apple TV+; which is quickly becoming a major platform for stellar original series.
If you haven't yet listened to the podcast, the trailer for the upcoming series will have you racing to tune in. Below, we've rounded up everything we know about television series so far.
What is The Shrink Next Door about?
As we know, the upcoming series is based on viral 2019 podcast by veteran journalist, Joe Nocera. Growing up in the Hamptons, Nocera lived next door to Ike Herschkopf; a therapist to the stars and some of Manhatten's elite. But while Nocera had always seen his neighbour as a hot-shot. But the truth was far from that; a reality he discovered one summer when Ike seemingly disappeared.
The upcoming series will track one of Ike's most infamous patient relationships and ultimately, the one that led to his downfall. It's no surprise that you can expect plenty of twists and turns to come...
The official synopsis reads; "Over the course of their relationship, the all-too-charming Ike slowly inserts himself into Marty’s life, even moving into Marty’s Hamptons home and persuading Marty to name him president of the family business. The series explores how a seemingly normal doctor-patient dynamic morphs into an exploitative relationship filled with manipulation, power grabs and dysfunction at its finest."
Who has been confirmed to star in The Shrink Next Door?
Like we said, the cast for The Shrink Next Door presents some of the industry's finest talents. Our man Paul Rudd will be starring as psychiatrist Dr Isaac ‘Ike’ Herschkopf; alongside Will Ferrell who will portray Martin ‘Marty’ Markowitz. Other key players include Bad Moms’ Kathryn Hahn, starring as Phyllis, Marty’s sister and Bride Wars’ Casey Wilson playing Dr. Herschkopf’s wife, Bonnie.
When will the series finally hit our screens?
