After 15 years in the music industry, six albums and three Grammy Awards up her sleeve, there's no questioning Annie Clark – aka St. Vincent's – talent. That doesn't mean we shouldn't continue to expect the unexpected from the artist, who is known historically for always pushing boundaries. Her latest project, The Nowhere Inn, sees St. Vincent join forces with Dakota Johnson and Carrie Brownstein for a film like no other. And yes, this formidable trio are all playing themselves.
Bending the genre-verse between film and documentary, The Nowhere Inn focuses on Clark, after she enlists Brownstein to direct a documentary about her life as a rock star and fashion icon. The intention is to give her audience and fans a behind-the-scenes look at her electric shows, but as the line between Clark and her on-stage person St. Vincent, continues to blur, the documentary quickly goes downhill.
The film first premiered at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year; and is set to hit cinemas next month. The trailer alone is enough to keep us hanging. Intrigued? Here's what you need to know.
What is The Nowhere Inn about?
Written by Clark and Brownstein and directed by by Portlandia alum Bill Benz; the film is an all encompassing meta-rock doc about the nightmare that can become art and perception.
According to the official synopsis, The Nowhere Inn is a "metafictional account of two creative forces banding together to make a documentary about St. Vincent’s music, touring life, and on-stage persona. But they quickly discover unpredictable forces lurking within the subject and filmmaker that threaten to derail the friendship, the project, and the duo’s creative lives."
"...a densely woven, laugh-out-loud funny and increasingly fractured commentary on reality, identity, and authenticity."
Is there a trailer?
As we already mentioned, the trailer for the film is everything we imagined it to be – in other words, totally crazy. Although Johnson's presence in the trailer is short; the snippet alone tells us it's absolutely worth our viewing. Whether out of sheer awkwardness or simply in the hope we'll be able to find out where in the world she scored that excellent black lingerie from. See for yourself in the trailer below.
When will The Nowhere Inn premiere?
The release date for the film has been confirmed as September 17; but there's no word yet on how you can watch The Nowhere Inn in Australia. Stay tuned for more details to come.
