Michele Morrone joins Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried in ‘The Housemaid’ adaptation

the housemaid cast

We — along with the rest of the internet — lost our minds earlier this year, at the news that Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried were bringing Freida McFadden’s best-selling novel, The Housemaid, to screens.

Now, there's a new addition to the cast, with the news that 365 Days actor Michele Morrone is officially on board.

The trio will be joined by director Paul Fieg, who’s best known for his work on hit films like Bridesmaids and A Simple Favour. As with many of her recent projects, Sweeney has also signed on to executive produce the project, alongside Seyfried and McFadden.

It's no surprise the book has been snapped up for the big screen. Not only has The Housemaid been on the New York Times bestseller list for more than a year, 75 weeks (and counting), and on the Amazon bestsellers list for 98 weeks and counting, but it has also sold over 3.6 million English copies, and been translated into 40 langauges.

Intrigued? Everything you need to know about The Housemaid adaptation, below.

Who is cast in The Housemaid?

Until recently, only Sweeney and Seyfried had been announced as part of the cast. Of course, that didn't stop the internet from speculating. Over on Instagram, many have shared their dream castings for Italian gardener Enzo, including Simone Sussina and Joe Manganiello. Now, we know that Morrone has landed the coveted role, with the news announced via TikTok.

While we’re still waiting to hear who will play the leading man, Andrew Winchester, some have speculated that It Ends With Us star Brandon Sklenar could be in line for the role.

What is The Housemaid about?

The film borrows its plot from the best-selling novel of the same, which was published in 2022. It follows Millie (Sydney Sweeney), a struggling young woman who is offered a job as a live-in housekeeper for the wealthy Winchester family, Nina (Amanda Seyfried) and Andrew (yet to be cast). According to the official logline, however, not everything is as it seems, and “Millie soon learns the family’s secrets are far more dangerous than her own.”

A synopsis of the novel gives a little more insight into exactly what we can expect to go down: “Every day I clean the Winchesters’ beautiful house top to bottom. I try to ignore how Nina makes a mess just to watch me clean it up. How she tells strange lies about her own daughter. And how her husband Andrew seems more broken every day.” Consider us intrigued.

When will The Housemaid be released?

With production yet to begin, it's too soon to know when The Housemaid will hit cinemas. We've got our fingers crossed for an early 2026 release date.
