By now, we've all become fairly accustomed to the book-to-movie adaptation phenomenon. As soon as any novel is heralded as a best-seller, you can rest assured that in the months following, a film or TV series is almost definitely on the cards. What we haven't seen nearly the same thirst for are our favourite true crime podcast series getting the on-screen treatment. Amanda Seyfried's latest project, however, could change the course of podcast adaptations forever, with Hulu announcing its new series, The Dropout.
Based on the story of former American businesswoman Elizabeth Holmes and her company Theranos; the series will focus on the rise and fall of the woman who was once crowned the world’s youngest self-made female billionaire. If you're a fan of white collar crime, this is definitely a series you should look out for. Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming series.
What is The Dropout about?
As mentioned above, the limited series will explore the downfall of Holmes and the overindulgence of ambition and fame that led to her shortcomings. It will also be based on Rebecca Jarvis' ABC News/ABC Radio podcast of the same name; which premiered to critical acclaim in 2019. Jarvis spent three years investigating Holmes, and the podcast description certainly hints to some major moments she uncovered along the way.
According to Hulu: “The Dropout is a limited series executive produced and starring Amanda Seyfried, inspired by the ABC News podcast on the rise and fall of Elizabeth Holmes and her company, Theranos. The series will explore what caused the world’s youngest self-made female billionaire, once heralded as “the next Steve Jobs,” to lose everything in the blink of an eye.”
Who will star in The Dropout?
So far, we know that Amanda Seyfried will be taking on the role of Holmes – who was initially set to be portrayed by Kate McKinnon. Seyfried has also come onboard as producer; making it clear that the series is one she's definitely invested in. Starring alongside her is actor Naveen Andrews, who you will definitely remember from the hit-series Lost. Andrews will take on the role of Sunny Balwani, Holmes’ secret boyfriend and business partner. Throughout it all, Balwani served as the company's president and chief operating officer. More details on the cast are yet to be announced, but we do know that Elizabeth Meriwether, who produced New Girl, will be jumping on as showrunner.
When will the series hit our screens?
Thankfully, we won't have to wait too long before we see The Dropout on our screens. The Hollywood Reporter shared that Hulu has plans to debut the series later this year (around Australian spring time), but the streaming platform is yet to release an official statement.
Is there a trailer for The Dropout yet?
Unfortunately, we're still awaiting the release of an official trailer for the series – which we'll be hanging eagerly for. In the meantime, we'll be getting ourselves acquainted with Jarvis' podcast. We suggest you should too.
