If you've noticed a pick up in Studio Ghibli content this past year, it's not just you/us. With the imminent need for comfort present at all times, Ghibli has answered such calls and has been unsuspectingly in the limelight since Netflix started hosting a selection of the animation houses films in early 2020.
While it may be niche, Ghibli's My Neighbor Totoro franchise has been most notably making headlines, with a luxury team-up with LOEWE in January, which debuted a capsule of limited-edition Totoro-themed ready-to-wear pieces alongside accessories. While not all of us can afford to fork out hundreds of dollars on animation themed luxury handbags, Lesportsac has stepped up to the plate for die-hard fans of the 1988 anime with a bag collaboration with Studio Ghibli.
“It was a dream, but it wasn’t a dream,” the tagline reads, referencing a quote from the movie. Offering a 22 piece collection with two key colorways, the capsule is designed with nods to the loveable main characters Satsuki and Mei, alongside illustrations of tiny Totoro characters. It's all very sweet.
The “Totoro Botanical” print displays repeated patterns of Totoro in a field of flowers. “Totoro Grey” is offered in monochrome gray with the mini soot sprites Satsuki and Mei find in the attic of their new home (those who know, know). Each of the patterns is printed onto the full collection of silhouettes: the Deluxe Everyday Bag, Emerald Tote, Harper Bag and Deluxe Weekender. As a sweet addition to the collection, makeup and toiletry bags following the same theme are offered in yellow and turquoise hues.
The Studio Ghibli x LeSportsac My Neighbor Totoro collection is scheduled to release on March 10 via the Lesportsac stores and retailers like Donguri Kyowakoku.
If you're in need of a new Studio Ghibli fix that doesn't come in the form of retail therapy, the animation houses first-ever CGI film titled Earwig and The Witch is out now.
