15 brands that perfectly encapsulate our spring mood

Look, I won't bore you with talk of the 'shifting seasons' and the 'shedding of layers'. You know as well as I do that spring is here. Are we feeling good about it? Considering there's a slice of sun warming my shoulders and a half-eaten tangelo next to my laptop, I can comfortably say, yes, yes I am.

It's time to begin the annual rotation where we pack up our coats to create room for the dresses, Bermuda shorts, strappy sandals and breezy tees we'll be sporting this time of year. If you've gotten this far in the process and have realised your outfit options are somewhat lacking, the next step is figuring out what you're going to do about it? Will you make a trip to your favourite op-shops and vintage stores? Or will you simply trawl secondhand resale sites and online vintage sellers?

If you've exhausted all these options and are serious about investing in something new, we've compiled a list of brands to consider incorporating into your spring wardrobes – and well into summer too. From Paloma Wool to OpéraSPORT, find a list of them all below.

1. OpéraSPORT

The fashion brand established in 2019 by Stephanie Gundelach, a renowned creative consultant and stylist, and Awa Malina Stelter fuses knowledge from the areas of design and production that inform all of their creative process. The sporty Copenhagen forward fashion story meets Parisian silhouettes and structure.

2. Shushu Tong

I can write about Shushu Tong until my last breath. But for brevity, I'll keep it short. The Shanghai-based fashion label is a study of binary, blending the elevated officewear of slate greys and blacks with a filmy, reference to nostalgic animes and femininity. As someone who wears exclusively black, grey, and a tinge of bubblegum pink, it's for those of us who flit between harsh tailoring and coquette.

3. Collina Strada

Founded in 2009 by designer Hillary Taymour, Collina Strada recognises itself as the fun nonconformist of luxury fashion. The New York–based label is community forward in its approach. As a blueprint for constructing colourful, eclectic, and “not boring” ready-to-wear, they are guided by attentive social practices and environmental conscience.

4. Belle the Label

An intuitive experiment in knit, A. Roege Hove pushes the limit of its sheer, highly stylised constructions that push shape and form to the front in their clothing. The silhouettes are exaggerated, but never bombastic. A perfect diffusion of transeasonal wear.

7. Alix Higgins

The label our guest editor Kim Russell would nominate to design our Olympic uniforms. I'm inclined to agree. With his rotating staple of polos, neoprene block-text creations, and zany evening wear, Alix Higgins is an Australian stalwart of spring wear.

8. Maryam Nassir Zadeh

What is spring attire without swim and loungewear? The label's conscious approach to strappy, lightweight construction (like their whip-smart T-shirt bag) is highly considered.

9. Gimaguas

Gimaguas, meaning twins. The Spanish label offers spring-wear proudly made in Barcelona, with a focus on muslin-tops, and cotton bras, skirts and bags. The copacabana top is a knitted V-line we'd love to flaunt at Carriageworks' markets ourselves.

10. Assembly Label

14. Maggie Marilyn

Described as a multidisciplinary movement community, culture, music and the Australian landscape are all referentially tied to Maggie Marilyn's style journey. With a newly launched Bridal collection, the label's ivory additions are all chantilly lace and perfect for any pollen-heavy nuptials.

15. Paris Georgia

Designed in New Zealand, the label is a conjoinment of luxurious fabrics and silhouettes that stand as an ode to the female form. Subtle design is prioritised over seasonal trends. This, combined with the brand’s focus on high-quality textiles and construction depicts Paris Georgia's take on a timeless, transcendent quality.
