Sophia Coppola's new book documents her personal archive of film ephemera

If you've ever wanted to paw through the film paraphernalia of Sofia Coppola, then you best prepare to get your hands on the cult filmmaker's new limited-edition book Sofia Coppola Archive: 1999-2023. The first to be authored directly by Coppola, a 488-page tome acts as a cache of personal ephemera accumulated from her more-than-two decades of filmography. From never-before-seen photographs and marked-up copies of the Vanity Fair article that inspired The Bling Ring, to posters from the The Virgin Suicides premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2000 – there's even an extended interview with acclaimed film journalist Lynn Hirschberg.

Despite coming from a long line of Hollywood royalty, Coppola has quite comfortably earned her spot as an acclaimed director and filmmaker on her own terms – her lush and dreamy world-building, coupled with her ability to pin down that certain 'je ne sais quoi' of what it means to experience modern girlhood, now hallmarks of her signature film aesthetic.

Mapping Coppola's film history, from The Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation, through to Marie Antoinette and The Beguiled – even documenting her upcoming biopic about the life of Priscilla Presley – the book is edited and annotated personally by the filmmaker for an intimate and unprecedented look at her oeuvre.

In a recent interview with US Vogue, Coppola said she had always kept and stored accumulated memorabilia after wrapping each film – forgotten boxes filled with magazine clippings, costume fitting Polaroids and script drafts. Considering the items junk, they remained untouched in her Napa, California family home until the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when Coppola used her downtime to sift through the items, hit suddenly with a sense of nostalgia and a desire to share their sentiments with her legions of devoted fans.
