5 shows like ‘Severance’ that are just as mysteriously thrilling

Shows like Severance

Severance season two is officially here, which means our Fridays are dedicated to the mysterious workings of Lumon's severed floor for the foreseeable future. However, as so often is the case, series creator and director Ben Stiller is drip-feeding us the new season, restricting us to just one new episode each week. If you're anything like me, you've likely found it virtually impossible to steer your mind away from the eerie goings on of Lumon since season two started — but what if there were other dystopian thrillers to fill the time between new Severance episodes?  Luckily, there is. Below, five shows like Severance to sink your teeth into next.

1. Black Mirror

Black Mirror explores the dark side of modern-day technology, via standalone episodes that will leave you questioning reality, much like Severance. Episodes like Nosedive or Playtest will give you that unsettling, sci-fi psychological twist we've come to love about Severance. Even better, there are 27 episodes in total to keep you occupied.

Black Mirror is now streaming on Netflix.

2. The Leftovers

If it's the mysterious, existential themes you love about Severance, The Leftovers might be right up your alley. It explores life after a strange, global disappearance that wipes out 2% of the world's population, and dives deep into the emotional and psychological effects on its characters. It's a slow burn, but that doesn't make it any less intense.

The Leftovers is now streaming on Binge.

3. Person of Interest

Person of Interest centres on Harold Finch, a reclusive billionaire who creates an advanced AI system called "The Machine" to predict threats to national security. Blending fast-paced action with philosophical questions about surveillance, AI, and free will, Person of Interest delves into themes of control and identity, making it a gripping watch for fans of the layered, tech-driven dystopia signature to Severance.

Person of Interest is now streaming on Apple TV.

4. Westworld

This series blurs the lines between reality and the artificial, with a focus on human consciousness, free will, and control. Based on Michael Crichton’s 1973 film of the same name, Westworld takes place in a futuristic theme park where wealthy guests can live out their fantasies by interacting with highly advanced humanoid robots known as "hosts." But as the hosts begin to gain self-awareness and question their existence, the park's carefully constructed reality starts to unravel.

Westworld is now streaming on Binge.

5. Legion

Legion follows David Haller, a man with extraordinary abilities who struggles with mental illness, and is unsure whether his powers are real or manifestations of his mind. As he uncovers the truth about his past and his connection to a powerful, dangerous force, he must navigate a world filled where reality is not always what it seems, and perceptions constantly shift. The show blends psychological drama with surreal, visually striking elements to explore identity, memory, and the nature of reality.

Legion is now streaming on Disney+.
