A legacy born in Golasecca
Rosita Missoni was born Rosita Jelmini on 24 November 1931, in Golasecca, Italy. Growing up in a family rooted in the textile industry, she developed an early appreciation for craftsmanship and design, which would later define her career.
In 1953, she married Ottavio “Tai” Missoni, and together, they launched the Missoni brand from the basement of their Gallarate home. The couple’s vision for innovative knitwear soon gained traction, with their groundbreaking use of patterns and colour earning the admiration of the fashion world.
Missoni’s signature style
Missoni redefined knitwear with its bold zigzag patterns, stripes, and kaleidoscopic hues. The House’s debut runway show in Milan in 1967 became a landmark moment in fashion history, showcasing a daring aesthetic that balanced artistry with wearability. Throughout her career, Missoni received numerous accolades for her contributions to fashion, including an honorary doctorate from the Politecnico di Milano in 2012. Her visionary approach and fearless creativity made her a trailblazer in Italian design.
Later life and legacy
In 1997, Missoni stepped back from fashion design, passing the creative torch to her daughter, Angela Missoni. She then dedicated herself to Missoni Home, where she continued to innovate by bringing the brand’s vibrant aesthetic into interior design.
Rosita’s outlook on fashion reflected her unique approach to life and design. She famously remarked, “Fashion is not something compulsory. I like it when people feel free,” capturing the essence of her inclusive and joyful philosophy. The Missoni brand, now led by the family’s second and third generations, stands as a testament to her enduring vision.
Rosita Missoni is survived by her children and grandchildren, who continue to honour her legacy in the world of fashion and design.
