It's already been a mammoth start to the year for Josh O'Connor, Elle Fanning and Kristen Stewart. O'Connor of course, the lead in Luca Guadagnino's hit Challengers (alongside Zendaya no less); Fanning about to finish filming as the Sylvie Russo to Timothée Chalamet's Bob Dylan in a much-anticipated biopic; and of course Stewart is fresh off the back of her gay bodybuilding drama Love Lies Bleeding.
But in news we couldn't have predicted until it came to be – all three young actors will be playing across from one another as part of an upcoming film. It's called Rosebushpruning, from Firebrand director Karim Aïnouz, and this is everything we know about the film so far...
What is it about?
Rosebushpruning is slated to be a a dark and satirical film, a story centred on ideas about family and social values while following one particular young man suffering from epilepsy who plots the murders of his dysfunctional family.
The film is an adaptation of Fists in the Pocket, an Italian satirical drama film written and directed by Marco Bellochio in 1965.
"I’m excited to be collaborating with Efthimis Filippou to revisit this iconic work to create a contemporary parable about the death of the traditional patriarchal family — which I hope will be touching and provocative in equal measure," said director Aïnouz.
Who is a part of the film?
At this point in production, we only have three names officially announced as attached to the script in front of the camera – Josh O'Connor, Elle Fanning and Kristen Stewart.
However, we also know that the adaptation will be directed by Karim Aïnouz (who was behind the Alicia Vikander-starring Firebrand and who is also in competition at Cannes this year with Motel Destino), from a script written by Efthimis Filippou (Dogtooth).
When will it be released?
According to Deadline, shooting for the film will begin later this year. Rosebushpruning will likely have a late 2025 release date.
