There are not many film sequels that could get me as excited as Princess Diaries 3. Let me explain. This is a film that, IMO, is amongst the best in the plethora of early 2000's romcoms. It has it all. Anne Hathaway as nepo baby Mia Thermopolis (that’s Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi), Julie Andrews as our literal queen, that dreamy light blue mustang chugging up San Francisco hills, THAT makeover scene. Need I go on?
Rumours of a third film in the Princess Diaries universe have been swirling ever since 2004, when we were gifted Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (and that staircase surfing scene). Now, we finally have confirmation that another sequel is in the works — and Anne Hathaway is on board to revive her iconic role.
The actress took to Instagram to share the history-making news, writing simply, "Miracles happen... The fairytale continues."

Who's involved in Princess Diaries 3?
Directed by the late Garry Marshall and based on the novel by Meg Cabot, the third Princess Diaries film will no doubt feel a little different. Luckily though, there are a few familiar faces.
Hathaway revealed that, this time around, the sequel will be directed by Adele Lim, who has previously worked on hits like Crazy Rich Asians and Raya and the Last Dragon. The script will be written by Flora Greeson, though exact details of the plot are still under wraps.
While it's unknown if icon Julie Andrews will be along for the ride, Hathaway has previously shared that she'd love to share the screen again with her former co-star. “If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work," she told Entertainment Tonight back in October, 2022.
Chris Pine (aka the handsome Nicholas Devereaux) told Entertainment Weekly back in May, 2024, that he might be on board. “Princess Diaries 3, where is it? Have you been reading my diary?" he said, adding, "I don't know. I haven't heard anything about it.”
Mandy Moore also shared on The Drew Barrymore Show she would love to be involved in the project, but said that she wasn't sure there was a place for her character's mean escapades.
“I kind of feel like my character was sort of the nemesis to Anne Hathaway's character in the first film and she was so mean, I feel like maybe there's no place for her [in a third film]. I would love, love, love to join those ladies again, anytime, but I also understand if there's no room for my awful character."
Another key player from the original crew who is also in for the third film is Martin Chase, who produced the first two films.
When will Princess Diaries 3 be released?
There's no word yet on when Princess Diaries 3 will be out, but with filming yet to take place, we'd guess that it will still be some time before it hits our screen.
