For its debut season, Presumed Innocent had us – and much of the world – in its grips. Now, we’re getting ready to return to the drama, with a second season officially in the works.
While season one found its plot from Scott Turow’s book by the same name, there’s been much speculation around what would happen in Presumed Innocent season two, with no obvious sequel in Turow’s anthology. Now, we have the answers, with Deadline reporting that, this time around, the season will be based on an upcoming legal thriller novel, Dissection of a Murder, by Jo Murray. Set for release in 2026, the book charts Leila Reynolds, an attorney trying her first murder case, where her husband just happens to be the prosecutor.
So how will this look on screen, and which actress is likely to lead the cast? All the important details below.
Who is cast in Presumed Innocent season two?
As for who will play Leila Reynolds, that remains to be seen – and we'd guess that it will be a while before this role is cast. But there are plenty of actress' we think would be up for the challenge. After nailing the role of defence attorney Leslie Abramson in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, we'd love to see Ari Graynor return to the courtroom. We'd also be down for an on-screen career switch for Myha'la who starred as Harper Stern in Industry, from the the high-stakes of Pierpoint, to the uncompromising arena of a murder trial.
In terms of who will return from season one, Jake Gyllenhaal will be on board in an executive producer capacity, as will Scott Turow, David E. Kelley and J.J. Abrams.
Peter Sarsgaard, who played prosecutor Tommy Molto, has hinted that he won't return for the sequel, telling IndieWire, “I’m not really that interested in sequels. I think I’ve only ever done one season of anything… I think I’m a one-season person.”
There's no word yet on whether any of the other actors who starred in season one are attached to the sequel.
What is the plot of Presumed Innocent season two?
We'll have to wait until the release of Dissection of a Murder for confirmation of exactly what will happen in season two. However, we know that it will follow Leila, a young attorney out of her depth in a murder trial – but the defendant only wants her. Complicating matters further, Leila's husband is the prosecutor and, as the trial unfolds, she finds herself fighting to keep her own secrets buried.
When will Presumed Innocent season two premiere?
Production is yet to begin, so we'd say season two won't hit our screens until 2026 or 2027 at the earliest. We'll keep you updated as we know more. In the meantime, binge season one of Presumed Innocent on AppleTV+ now.
