Is there anywhere in the world that is more emblematic of the sweet life than Italy's Portofino. A tiny enclave tucked neatly into the Italian Riviera on the Ligurian coastline, this magical spot is considered so luxurious that Ferrari named one of its flagship cars after the township. Now you know how the Ferrari Portofino found its name.
Recently, founder of Raaie skincare Katey Mandy ventured on a leisurely sojourn through this exclusive and one of the most iconic destinations in Italy. If you're looking to follow suit, here is her guide of where to stay, what to do and what to eat in Portofino.
Where to stay
If you want to channel old-school Riviera chic, there’s nowhere quite like Splendido, A Belmond Hotel, Portofino.
This place is the queen bee of hillside opulence, looking down over the rest of the village like an empress surveying her court. It’s polished, preened, and perfect, with its maze of terraces and gardens that somehow feel both glamorous and utterly intimate. The vibe is pure 1960s jet-set, with plenty of quiet corners for a glass of Prosecco in the garden.
For something a little less grand but still gorgeous, try Eight Hotel Portofino. It’s understated, cool, and just a stone’s throw from the piazzetta—so you’re right in the heart of the action.
What to Eat
Food is everything here, so start with the essentials. Grab a slice of focaccia al formaggio from a local bakery, still warm from the oven, oozing salty cheese and olive oil. It’s simple, salty, and worth every calorie.
If you’re in the mood to linger, Ristorante Puny is the perfect long lunch spot. Their trofie al pesto is light, fresh, and loaded with fresh basil. For something more opulent, head up to La Terrazza at Splendido. The seafood is as fresh as it gets, and the sunset views are pure magic.
What to Do
Portofino is made for slow, meandering days. Hire a boat and drift along the coastline, finding your own secret cove to swim and sunbathe. That’s my favourite way to see the place - just you, the sea, the sound of the waves and the occasional sip of wine. For a little culture, walk up to the Church of San Giorgio or visit the Brown Castle; both give you killer views over the Ligurian coast.
When it comes to shopping, hit the streets around the Piazzetta. Expect a mix of high-end boutiques and designer labels—think Gucci, Prada, and Dolce & Gabbana, all nestled alongside charming local shops offering artisanal goods. Don’t miss the chance to explore the handmade ceramics and silk scarves. Pick up a chic beach coverup to flaunt from one seaside soirée to the next.
And if you’re feeling bold, rent a Vespa. Though the drivers are to be wary of, there’s nothing like zipping through winding roads, with the breeze in your hair and the Italian coastline as your backdrop, feeling like you’ve stepped straight out of a Fellini film. Portofino is about indulging in the details—the flavours, the views, the little moments that make you stop and breathe.
