The model super Peggy Moffitt has passed away. On Saturday, August 10th, the American actress and muse died at the age of 86 following a drawn out health battle. She is survived by her son Christopher Claxton, who confirmed the news of her death. A stalwart of the Swinging 60s, Moffitt defined the era with her Vidal Sassoon blunted pixie chop, instantly recognisable through her five-points. She also revolutionised the bottom-fringed eyelash look side by side with her co-conspirator Twiggy. Of course, what tribute would this be without mention of the audacious mono-kini? The viral image of Moffitt topless is one which invariably draws on her quiet power and strength.
In life, she was allied with photographer Rudi Gernreich and photographer William Claxton, the later of whom she married and shared a son with. The three of them banded together to create some of Moffitt's most iconic editorials and fashion films, all of which highlighted her characteristic flair and spunk.
Without Rudi, I would have been a gifted and innovative model. Without me, he would have been an avant-garde designer of genius. We made each other better. We were each other’s catalyst,” Moffitt is quoted in The Rudi Gernreich Book.
Below, we pay homage to one of the best to ever do it. Let's waltz back into the 60s – and see what took place through the imagery of Moffit herself.
