Rejoice! Pantone has just released their colour of the year for 2023 along with some words of wisdom about the state of our world. This year's colour is "Viva Magenta," which symbolizes strength and optimism as countries continue to open up after three years of the pandemic.
As an authority on colour that permeates the waves of fashion, design, art and beyond, Pantone prides itself on its extensive cross-disciplinary analysis as it sets the tone for the year to come.
What was last year's colour?
This new magenta will replace 2022's colour of the year, "Very Peri," which "helped us to embrace this altered landscape of possibilities, opening us up to a new vision as we rewrite our lives." We saw this colour woven through the zeitgeist of 2022, appearing across collections and runways like Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton.
Prior to "Very Peri," we saw 2021's "Illuminating," and "Ultimate Gray."
Pantone describes "Viva Magenta" as "A nuanced crimson tone that represents the balance between warm and cool." A shade that "comfortably straddles the physical and the virtual." In pop culture, magenta has already made a few appearances, with Harry Styles sporting a Gucci Magenta blazer to Venice for the Premier of Don't Worry Darling and Charlize Theron debuting her signature sultry magenta smokey eye.

Leatrice Eisman, the Pantone Color institute's executive director explained, that the message of 2023's Pantone shade “encourages self-expression without restraint."
The energy of “Viva Magenta” will help “get us over this next hurdle — wherever it takes us.” Eiseman continued, “Those words will help to take us into the future and get away from any of the concerns that we might still have. And we do. COVID-19 hasn’t gone away entirely. It gives us the energy to balance what has happened and where we are going in the future.”
