Joining the annual pilgrimage to Byron Bay for our favourite winter festival, Brand & Creative Services Co-ordinator Megan Nolan takes us for a weekend away at Splendour in the Grass.
Stay …
I’ve always been a huge fan of camping on-site to avoid the masses heading back to Byron at the end of the night. The showers are warm (a luxury at festivals) and if you wait to shower before bed there are no cues. Hiring a camper van also makes for a much more enjoyable festival experience and you don’t have to worry about packing up a tent when that last day hangover hits. If camping isn’t your style then an AirBnB in Byron Bay is the way to go, with buses into the festival every half hour.
Listen …
Splendour never fails to disappoint when it comes to incredible live music. The big names like Tame Impala, Childish Gambino and SZA are all on my list but I’m also hoping to get down early to see some of the smaller home grown talent. Hatchie, Ruby Fields, Kaiit and Odette are all definitely worth an earlier start to the day and for those camping, Milan Ring and Genesis Owusu taking over the Red Bull tent definitely shouldn’t be missed.
Take …
My rule of thumb is you can never be over prepared. If you think you might need a jacket bring two – no matter how many trips you've made to the bar, it’s always colder than you think. Comfortable shoes, a beanie, a refillable drink bottle, a portable phone charger and lip balm will also go a long way.
Eat …
If you’re lucky enough to make it into the Gold Bar (the VIP area for artists and the lucky few with VIP tickets) then a Mary’s burger or pizza is the way to go. For those of us in GA you can still have a VIP experience at the Icebergs x Splendour pop up. With a private backstage location overlooking the lake and three courses, it sounds like the perfect hangover cure.
