Try as we might to resist it, the noughties comeback has persisted and, with it, some of the era’s more regrettable fashion choices are being dragged from the archives. The latest clothing relic we’re dusting off? The mullet skirt.
Much like the haircut it’s named after, the mullet skirt features a shorter, leg-baring front, which graduates into a longer maxi length at the back. The high-low silhouette reigned supreme in the early 2010s, around the same time as statement necklaces, wedges, and pops of neon had us in a collective chokehold. But if the thought of returning to this era is giving you flashbacks of being 14 in the Supré changeroom, don’t panic. Luckily, in 2024, designers are breathing new life into the mullet skirt, and making a compelling case for the style as a must-have in our Spring/Summer wardrobes.
Take Melbourne label With Harper Lu, who recently debuted the style in crisp white and blush colourways. Simple and a little regal feeling, the design proves asymmetry can exist without feeling kitschy or overdone. Others have incorporated the design into dresses which, when done well, hit just above the knee, creating the perfect skin-baring window, before billowing out into a little drama at the back. There's also been a welcome departure from the chiffon materials that dominated mullet skirts in decades gone by. In their place, satins and lace cascade into layers, creating a cacophony of texture that falls asymmetrically around its wearer.
Ready to embrace the past? Below, we're rounding up the mullet skirts we'd actually wear in 2024 and beyond.
