Mugler ushers in a new era of futurism for its SS21 collection

It's time to slink into a new era of mesh-clad fashion, and Mugler SS21 is leading the charge.

For Mugler's creative director Casey Cadwallader, this means opting for a see-now-buy-now mode of showing the brands most recent collection, a concept which, despite the industry being turned on its head in the past year, hasn't quite caught on en masse.

It's futurism embodied. From the concept of the immediately available ready-to-wear collection (which has been trialled by luxury brands to no avail throughout the years) to the collection video itself - a display of the silhouettes Mugler does so well, brought forward by modern technology and cyborg-esque movement via models. “There's an immediacy to fashion now. And fashion is about a seduction, it's about you seeing something and going, 'Oh man, that is something I really want to have',” Cadwallader tells i-D. “To me, it just makes more sense that you should be able to have it right then if you want.”

A sentiment that clearly makes sense once you see the collection. It is practically made to be coveted. Slinky mesh bodysuits with streamlined contouring in classic Mugler fashion are paired alongside structural blazers and shapes that emphasize curves, the same ones that are synonymous with Thierry Mugler's original blueprint. It is the Mugler way modernized, and it feels sexier than ever.

The notion is solidified on the wearers of the collection, who unify through a multifaceted lens of what sexiness looks like in a modern landscape. Today's supers - Bella Hadid, Alek Wek, Irina Shayk and Soo Joo Park are joined by some of the most prolific figures in the cultural hemisphere - Hunter Schafer, Dominique Jackson, Patia Borja, and Kembra Pfahler. It is a coming together of spirit, fully realized as a collective of talent beyond the binary beauty standards of the past, pushed into pop culture's spotlight as a commentary on the way forward for fashion, and we couldn't be more thrilled to witness it.
