Our unproblematic king, Donald Glover, granted us a huge treat in 2021 when he and Prime Video announced a reboot of one of the most iconic films of the early 2000s: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's sexy killer 2005 film, Mr. and Mrs. Smith. While there has been a few changes to the project since then – namely, the exit of Phoebe Waller-Bridge as co-lead and co-producer – we do have our first trailer for the reboot. Find that, and all the other details around the reimagined Mr. & Mrs. Smith, below.
What is the series about?
Similarly to the the original film, the series will be about two strangers who land jobs with a spy agency that requires them to be in an arranged marriage. However, we're told that the Mr. & Mrs Smith reboot will be tonally different to the source material. Hiro Murai, the Japanese filmmaker who directed the music video for Glover's This Is America is behind the first two episodes, if that offers any inkling of what to expect.
Who is in the cast?
Maya Erskine has stepped into the title role in place of Waller-Bridge, who told Vanity Fair back in June her reasoning for leaving the series was down to a desire to not "get in the way of a vision". "I worked on that show for six months fully in heart and mind and really cared about it — still care about it,” she continued. “And I know it’s gonna be brilliant. But sometimes it’s about knowing when to leave the party... Creative collaboration is like a marriage, and some marriages don’t work out.”
The series has also attracted the attention of some other notable names, adding to their cast list: Parker Posey, Wagner Moura, Michaela Coel, John Turturro, Paul Dano, Eiza González, Sarah Paulson, Alexander Skarsgård, Sharon Horgan, and Ron Perlman.
When will it be released?
The show is set to premiere on 2 February 2024 via Amazon's streaming service, Prime Video.
