These five films scored the most nominations at the Golden Globes 2025

Awards season is officially underway, and the first nominations to cross our desk come courtesy of the Golden Globes. We woke this morning to news that the esteemed awards ceremony has unveiled those in the running for coveted titles like Best Picture: Drama, and Best Actress: Musical/Comedy. While the past 12 months shaped up to be some of the most stellar in the world of television and cinema, that means, when awards season comes around, it can be a particularly tight race. That being said, several productions have emerged as the frontrunners at the 2025 Golden Globes – and the results may surprise you. See who took home the most nominations – and who missed out – below.

Leading the charge is Emilia Perez, which received a total of 10 nominations. The film stars Zoe Saldana as a high-powered lawyer, who takes on a rather unusual assignment: helping a Mexican cartel leader (Karla Sofia Gascón) fake their death and undergo gender-affirming procedures. It also stars stars Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, and Édgar Ramírez.

The Brutalist

Next in line is The Brutalist. Set in post-war Europe, the film charts László Toth (Adrien Brody), an architect who flees to America in an attempt to rebuild his work and, importantly, his marriage to wife Erzsébet (Felicity Jones) after being forced apart during the war.

Anora

Next up was fan favourite Anora, which has generated plenty of awards buzz since director Sean Baker took home the coveted Palme d’Or prize at this year's Cannes Film Festival. Still yet to be released in Australia, the film tells the compelling story of a young sex worker (Mikey Madison), who marries into wealth when she meets the son of a Russian oligarch (Mark Eidelstein).

The Substance

Also pulling five nominations was Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley's gruesome masterpiece, The Substance. The hit film takes aim at female beauty standards and ageism with the story of Elisabeth Sparkle, a television veteran who is fired from her show on her 50th birthday.

Wicked

Historically, musicals have been hit or miss when it comes to both commercial and critical success, but Wicked looks set to change that narrative. The epic first part to this story, starring Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, and Jonathan Bailey, has enjoyed massive success so far, even taking home three Golden Globes nominations.
