Everything you’ve ever wanted to know about microneedling

When I'd first heard of microneedling years ago, I knew it as a treatment for scarring, specifically acne scarring. I've had some friends who've tried with incredible results. But microneedling is no longer just a pricey procedure to minimise deep scars.

In recent times, more and more clinics are offering this service. In fact, there are some aesthetic clinics that are dedicated to solely to microneedling. Why? Because this particular facial treatment actually has a whole host of skin benefits - not just addressing scarring.

Microneedling is quickly becoming one of the most sought after facial treatments out there. In fact, Google Trends data shows that the interest in microneedling has increased by roughly 30 per cent in the last 12 months alone. Since microneedling can do things like reduce pigmentation, minimise pores and tighten up loose skin, it's understandable why so many are quickly becoming needling devotees.

With this in mind, we asked an expert to answer all our microneedling questions. Corri Marshall is the co-founder and cosmeceutical director of DermapenWorld - the world's number one microneedling company. From the key benefits to "does it hurt", Marshall shares everything you've ever wanted to know about microneedling.

What exactly is microneedling?

Microneedling is a skincare treatment that uses tiny, sterile needles to create micro-injuries on the skin's surface. This prompts the skin’s natural healing process, which stimulates collagen and elastin production—two key components for maintaining youthful, healthy skin.

What does microneedling do? How does it work to improve the skin?

Microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin, which kick-starts your body’s healing process. This not only helps to produce more collagen and elastin but also encourages cell turnover, which results in smoother texture, reduced fine lines, and improved overall skin tone. The micro-channels created also allow for better absorption of skincare products.

What is microneedling good for? What skin conditions or concerns can be treated by microneedling?

Microneedling is great for a range of skin concerns — everything from fine lines and wrinkles to acne scars, enlarged pores, and uneven texture. It can also help improve pigmentation issues and even stretch marks, making it incredibly versatile.

Does it hurt?

The sensation really depends on your pain tolerance, but most people describe it as more of a mild prickling feeling than actual pain. Personally, I don't find it uncomfortable. Some clinics offer numbing cream, but I recommend skipping it because it can act as a vasoconstrictor, slowing down the natural inflammatory response that’s key for boosting collagen production. Devices like the Professional Dermapen 4 or the at-home Dermapen HOME make it easier to adjust the depth and speed settings, so you can tailor the treatment to your comfort level. Trust me, the results are worth the minor discomfort!

How many sessions do you need to see results? And how far apart should they be?

You’ll usually start to see noticeable changes after just one or two sessions. For more significant results, like improving acne scars or deep wrinkles, a course of treatments is recommended. Sessions are typically spaced about four to six weeks apart to give the skin time to heal and regenerate.

What is the aftercare like? What products should you use afterwards for the best results?

Aftercare is all about keeping the skin hydrated and protected. I recommend using gentle, hydrating serums like hyaluronic acid and nourishing moisturisers. For a top-notch hyaluronic acid option, the Dp Dermaceuticals HYLA ACTIVE is fantastic. It’s a great choice for maintaining hydration. Avoid harsh active ingredients like retinol or exfoliating acids for a few days to let your skin heal properly.

And don’t forget sun protection — always use a good sunscreen after microneedling to keep your skin safe and enhance your results.

How soon after can you wash your face or wear makeup?

You should wait at least 24 hours before washing your face or applying makeup to give your skin time to start healing. After that, you can use gentle, non-irritating products. I recommend Dp Dermaceuticals COVER RECOVER for those who want to wear makeup post-treatment. This weightless, buildable foundation offers excellent coverage, hiding redness and blemishes while protecting your skin against irritation. It’s breathable, so it won’t block pores or lead to breakouts, making it ideal for sensitive and dry skin. It also includes SPF for added protection.

What's the difference between an at home treatment and an in-salon treatment?

The main difference lies in the depth and intensity of the treatment. The Dermapen HOME is designed for safe and effective use at home, providing results that complement professional treatments. It offers a more accessible way to maintain your skin's health between salon visits. In contrast, in-salon treatments use advanced equipment and techniques to achieve deeper and more pronounced results, tailored to address specific skin concerns more intensively. Both approaches can be highly effective, depending on your skincare needs and goals.

Is microneedling similar to dermarolling?

They both involve needling the skin, but the techniques are very different. Dermarollers use a rolling motion that can cause uneven trauma to the skin and even risk tearing it. The Dermapen HOME, on the other hand, uses a vertical stamping motion, which is much safer and more precise. Plus, with the Dermapen HOME, you get single-use, sterile needle cartridges, which makes it much more hygienic.

Are there any downsides to microneedling? Or anything that people need to be aware of before they start?

Microneedling is generally safe, but there can be temporary redness or mild irritation after the treatment. It’s also important to avoid sun exposure and certain skincare ingredients during the healing process. If you have any serious skin conditions like eczema or active acne, it’s best to consult a qualified skincare specialist before starting.

Do you have any advice for anyone interested in microneedling?

Start slow and be consistent. Whether you’re doing at-home treatments or visiting a clinic, patience is key—results improve with regular use. Always choose high-quality devices like the Dermapen HOME for safety and the best results, and follow the aftercare instructions carefully to ensure your skin heals properly.
