The 2022 Met Gala (and all the accompanying memes and hot takes) is barely cold in its grave and already there's talks of the theme for 2023. It makes sense. Especially after witnessing just how strictly onlookers policed attendees on their adherence to Gilded Glamour. This year the annual charity gala felt particularly crazed, which you would have noticed if you found yourself tuning in on Instagram, Twitter or TikTok. The people are rabid for first looks, behind the scenes photoshoots, back stories, and all the newfound intimacies that social media has afforded. So we'll be the first to admit that we're hardly surprised some have already set their sights on next year's theme.
While we're not one to report on gossip, a recent Instagram story posted by DeuxMoi (the internets answer to Lady Whistledown) appears to claim that a Met Gala theme for 2023 has already been set. In the post, it shows a screenshot of a submission form with the subject set as "Failed the MET Gala assignment" from an anonymous source under the pseudonym of 'depressed gay intern'. It was also sent from an email using the name Andy Sachs, so there's that too.
“I work at the HQ for one of the designers who misunderstood the MET Gala assignment and we just got scolded!!!!!," the anonymous source wrote. "For the first time since ’83 designers will now need their outfits pre-approved, regardless of who the clothes hanger walking the red carpet will be”.
They also went on to reveal that the 2023 theme is rumoured to be "space themed". "Side note: Next year’s theme is rumoured to be space-themed and we might have to genuinely dress Elon fucking Musk. I’m not even joking. I have to walk into this office every day and see a sketch of him on the pinboard," the post concluded. While we're hesitant to believe this post without any concrete proof, we can sympathise with the poor intern, especially on the part about dressing Elon Musk.
Could space really be the theme for the 2023 Met Gala? For Tom Ford's sake I hope not. But we're just going to have to wait for official confirmation to find out.
