Givenchy’s latest creative director Matthew Williams is set to present his inaugural Givenchy haute couture collection this July. While details are scant at present, it has been reported the designer is currently conceiving his first haute couture offering for the House.
What can we expect from Matthew William’s Givenchy Haute Couture?
If we are to go off of Williams’ latest Givenchy collection – fall winter 2022 – we may see the haute couture line blending a sense of practicality with experimental motifs commonplace in the designer’s work, across both the House and his solo label, 1017 ALYX 9SM. His debut collection celebrated brand heritage, with references to the work of Alexander McQueen and Riccardo Tisci, both former creative directors of the House, something which may indicate his couture looking retrospectively at the archives alongside making his own stamp in the collection.
Givenchy haute couture has shape-shifted dependent on the designer’s helming the brand, with the original conception under founder Hubert de Givenchy now synonymous with Audrey Hepburn and quintessential 1950s style. Under John Galliano and then McQueen, we saw nods to more theatrical storytelling inherent to the designers, an example of how their individual aestheticism influenced the French House.
Julien Macdonald adhered to classical ideas of Parisian elegance, and Tisci’s 12-year reign at the brand saw a swathe of experimentation across the Givenchy haute couture collections. Williams’ predecessor Clare Waight Keller is perhaps best known for placing a contemporary spin on the House couture offerings, pairing leggings with tailored jackets and thigh high boots with lace appliqué dresses.
Notable reinventions from Williams sine helming Givenchy has included his fresh take on the iconic Antigona accessories range, multiple footwear drops and invoking models Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid in his spring summer 2021 campaign.
When is the Givenchy Haute Couture show?
While we wait for official word from Givenchy concerning the haute couture line, a full reveal of the collection is expected this July.
