Mila Kunis is starring in the film adaptation of Luckiest Girl Alive, based off of the 2015 book of the same title. The film also stars Justine Lupe and Chiara Aurelia, launching on Netflix next month.
What is the plot of Luckiest Girl Alive?
Luckiest Girl Alive follows the life of Ani (Kunis), described in the synopsis as "a sharp-tongued New Yorker who appears to have it all: a sought-after position at a glossy magazine, a killer wardrobe and a dream Nantucket wedding on the horizon."
However, one day, her life is turned on its head when she is approached by a true crime documentary maker (Lupe) who would like her to share the story of an incident that happened when in high school. After hearing out the woman’s idea, Ani begins to confront hidden demons of her past that can no longer be quashed.
Luckiest Girl Alive is an adaptation of Jessica Knoll’s novel of the same title, released in 2015. The novel swiftly became a best-seller, with many women relating to its underscoring theme of trauma, on which Knoll drew from personal experience. While not revealed at the time of its release, Knoll subsequently revealed in a 2016 essay she had been sexually assaulted by three men at her high school when she was only 15 years old and she was relentlessly bullied for the rest of her high school years.

"The first person to tell me I was gang-raped was a therapist, seven years after the fact," she wrote in her essay. “The second was my literary agent, five years later, only she wasn't talking about me. She was talking about Ani, the protagonist of my novel, Luckiest Girl Alive, which is a work of fiction.”
“What I've kept to myself, up until today, is that its inspiration is not."
