Prepare to covet the Louis Vuitton x Murukami re-edition

Few pieces of fashion are as ferociously coveted or instantly recognisable as Japanese artist Takashi Murakami’s collection with Louis Vuitton. It was 2003 when this partnership irrevocably changed our brain chemistry, sending the first of the now-iconic miniaturized Speedy bags, with Louis Vuitton’s insignia reimagined – thanks to Murukami’s touch – in a vivid rainbow hue. Unsurprisingly, the line quickly became one of the most coveted of the season – a status it has maintained more than two decades on, with the hard-to-find pieces still a fixture on the arm of the biggest It girls.

Fast forward to today, as our obsessions with all things Y2k reaches fever pitch, and a Murukami and Louis Vuitton renaissance is upon us, with the House and the Japanese artist announcing the arrival of Louis Vuitton x Murukami, a joyful re-edition that celebrates and updates the original collection. Featuring more than 200 pieces, the re-imagined collection showcases Murukami’s playful creativity across a far-reaching assortment of Louis Vuitton pieces. This time around, advances in technology mean the colours are more vivid and Murukami’s motifs more precise than ever before.

Among pieces that will undoubtedly earn a spot on the wish lists of the entire fashion community are some of Louis Vuitton’s most recognisable contemporary designs. The iconic Monogram Multicolore — i.e., what many of us remember as the central motif of the original collection — will take shape on the House’s many emblematic City Bags: the Keepall, the Coussin, the Dauphine, the OnTheGo and, of course, the Speedy. The colourful monogram will also make an appearance on belts, wallets, wedge espadrilles and, perhaps most significant of all, an eye-catching Rolling Trunk. Other motifs are also set to take centre stage, like the playful LV Hands logo, emblazoned on a series of Alma BB Bags, and the Cherry Blossom pattern on vibrant Papillon bags, platform sandals, and the Courrier Lozine 110 Fleurs trunk.
