There's not much in the high fashion world quite as iconic as the Louis Vuitton trunk – a hallmark of status; holding a candle to the House's storied and irreverent history. And so, it only makes sense that the French fashion Maison is honoured with the role of Official Trophy Trunk partner of the Australian Open, the opening Grand Slam tournament of the season.
For the occasion, Louis Vuitton have expertly crafted two elegant and striking Official Trophy Trunks for the Australian open – one for each of the magnificent and coveted Australian Open trophies. The Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup for women and the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup for men will be on show for the start of both the women’s and men’s finals on January 27 and 28 next year, and of course, for the subsequent prize-giving ceremonies.
"We are proud to announce this new partnership with the first Grand Slam tournament of 2024, which once again shows that Victory travels in Louis Vuitton," says Pietro Beccari, Chairman and CEO of Louis Vuitton. "For more than 170 years, the Maison has been creating trunks that embody excellence, creativity and audacity, all values we share with the world's greatest sporting events."
Each of the specially designed trunks are hand-crafted by the French Maison's experienced and expert artisans in their historic workshops in Asnières, just outside Paris. The trunks' wooden frames are covered in their iconic Louis Vuitton Monogram canvas, each finished with a classic lozine leather trim and the same brass corner protectors, lock and clasps that have been used on Louis Vuitton trunks for more than a century and a half – since the 1860s.
But the real devil is in the delightful little details with these Official Trophy Trunks. The trunks’ two front panels, which fold back to reveal the trophies inside, are painted with a striking single white V – a marker for both the words 'Victory' and 'Vuitton'. Both cases are lined with blue microfibre – incorporated to compliment the Grand Slam tournament's official colour palette and its signature blue courts – and are topped off with the Australian Open logo – a white 'AO' – on the underside of the lid.
Louis Vuitton have had a longstanding commitment to the tennis and greater sporting world, which began with creating bespoke Trophy Trunks for the FIFA World Cup, the Rugby World Cup, Formula One’s Grand Prix de Monaco and for Roland Garros, and the Davis Cup.
"Louis Vuitton is renowned for creating iconic trunks and we are delighted with the stunning hand-crafted custom trunks created for our historic Australian Open trophies," said Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley. "The Australian Open and Louis Vuitton both share a commitment to unparalleled excellence and innovation, while retaining great respect for history, tradition and the celebration of legendary achievement and skill."
