Nicolas Cage's new horror flick 'Longlegs' might just be one of the scariest films of the year

It seems like this winter is poised to be a scary one as anticipation builds for a swathe of upcoming horror films like Ti West's MaXXXine, the prequel for A Quiet Place, and now garnering much fanfare online– Nicolas Cage's new horror film Longlegs.

Directed by Osgood Perkins, known for his knack for atmospheric horror, Longlegs is set to dive deep into the unsettling and eerie, blending psychological thrills with supernatural elements. And despite the film still being on the precipice of release, it's already getting some serious buzz online (with a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score and plenty of critical acclaim).

Critics are already hailing Longlegs as one of the scariest films of the year. Perri Nemiroff from Collider noted, "The mystery/unsolved serial killer case is wildly fascinating and hugely unnerving. No spoilers, of course, but where things land? I’ve never seen anything quite like it", while Shannon McGrew from Nightmarish Conjurings praised it as her favourite Oz Perkins film, highlighting its ability to get under the viewer's skin.

For everything we know about the film, like the plot, cast and release date, read on ...

Who is in the cast?

Nicolas Cage is the film's lead, bringing his magnetic screen presence and knack for portraying complex characters to titular role. This role marks a return to the darker, more introspective characters that have defined some of his most acclaimed work – from Mandy (2018) to Willy's Wonderland (2021).

Adding to the film's allure is the casting of scream queen Maika Monroe (who you may remember from that cult classic sexually-transmitted-demon film, It Follows, from 2014).

What is the plot?

The narrative centres on FBI Agent Lee Harker (payed by Monroe) who becomes embroiled in a series of disturbing murders when assigned to an unsolved serial killer case that takes an unexpected turn. The film explores themes of guilt, redemption, and the occult, all hallmarks of Perkins' storytelling style.

When will it be released?

Longlegs will be released on Thursday 11 July 2024 across theatres in Australia.
