There aren't many animated films that have gained the cult success quite like Studio Ghibli's 2001 Spirited Away. The film directed by Hayao Miyazaki which debuted some two decades ago, catapulted to instant international acclaim. Not only becoming the highest grossing film in Japanese history, but the first hand drawn animation to take home an Academy Award. Now our wildest animated dreams have come true: Loewe has launched a capsule collection paying tribute to the enchanting story by beloved Studio Ghibli.
Of course we can expect to see the films most notable characters making an appearance in the designs, including protagonist Chihiro, the mysterious Haku to sorceress Yubaba and no face spirit Kaonashi, Fly-Bird and the Susuwatari soot sprites. The designs of the characters feature across ready-to-wear blankets and scarves, as well as leather and canvas bags. Including the Amazona, Puzzle, Hammock and Flamenco totes and small leather accessories.
Loewe's signature craftsmanship takes centerstage as well, interpreting the themes of Studio Ghibli animations through jacquard, print, appliquè, leather marquetry, or embroidery. The designers cleverly allow for whole landscapes to become three dimensional, using a classic Japanese technique known as 'Boro'. This technique consists of mended and indigo-dyed scraps patchworked together to create an eclectic textile pattern.
The essence of the filmmakers vision combines seamlessly with the Loewe design ethos. That reflects the pain-staking dedication of working by hand. Something that is truly matured at the design house and that continues to prevail with each collection.
The images of the campaign shot by Juergen Teller, feature a diverse set, including singer Dua Saleh, models Kit Butler, Hyunji Shin and Mica Arganaraz. Throughout the campaign, kittenish imagery is used to create the dynamic intersection between fantasy and reality. The message ultimately being one of heartwarming escapism that plays homage to a truly special time in cinema.
You can shop the entire collection when it launches January 7 online at Loewe.
