It seems the name Lily-Rose Depp hasn't left our lips lately – from discussion around her controversial lead role as pop-star Jocelyn in HBO and Sam Levinson's now-axed The Idol, to her status as something of a fashion icon and muse – she's risen from the status of celebrity to become something of a cultural phenomenon, and we're hungry for more.
Ever since Depp attended the 2019 Met Gala wearing archival Chanel Haute Couture paired with tousled, undone hair and a lick of eyeliner, she's been seared into our minds as something of a fashion icon. An ambassador for the French fashion House since 2015, the pair go together like tweed and Lagerfeld, the actress often sporting Chanel pieces on the red carpet and while socialising with friends and is frequently side-of-runway for shows.
Depp's personal style has also evolved in recent years. At only 25 years of age, she combines a timeless elegance alongside trending motifs, with the odd retro-inspired number not an outlier in her rotation – a Mod-like shift dress is never off the cards.
Now, Depp is set to grace our screens once again, this time as Ellen in Robert Eggers film remake of the classic vampire tale, Nosferatu. While the film is yet to hit theatres here in Australia, it's already solidifying Depp as a star of the big screen. In honour of this star-making turn, get to know the actress of the moment, below.
On her upbringing...
Depp was born in Paris in 1999, and raised in a French-American household. She is the daughter of Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp, and older sister to Jack Depp. She grew up speaking both English and French, and is still fluent in both. At just 7 years old, Depp had a near-death experience, spending 9 days in hospital after a severe E.coli food poisoning experience. Her father was on set of Sweeney Todd at the time, and described it as the “darkest period of his life" during a 2015 interview on The Graham Norton Show.
Despite her parents' split when she was 13-years-old, and having grown up in the spotlight, Lily-Rose called her teenage years easy-going. An independent child, Depp left school when she was 17 years old to pursue acting full time.

On her career...
Depp originally wanted to pursue a singing career like her mother who, back in 1991, topped the French charts when she released her single Joe Le Taxi at just 14 years old.
However after acting in her first major film in 2014, Yoga Hosers, Depp realised that she was more comfortable on set than making music. “I wanted to be a singer, but once I started acting, I felt so comfortable. Now all I want to do is act.” she told The Sun in 2019.
Since then, she has starred in a handful of both English and French-language productions, like Planetarium alongside Natalie Portman, and The King, where she starred opposite Robert Pattinson, Joel Edgerton, and Timothée Chalamet.
Her most controversial role to date is her lead role in HBO's ill-fated The Idol, where she played the lead role of pop-star Jocelyn, co-starring alongside The Weeknd, Troye Sivan, BLACKPINK's Jennie and Rachel Sennott amongst other notable names. The show's first season had a tumultuous ride in the media, and soon after it was confirmed that there would be no follow-up season. Depp, however, said in an Instagram post that the show was "the most special experience I’ve ever had, and I thank my lucky stars every day for the most beautiful little family we all built together."

On her relationship with Chanel...
Depp has had a close relationship with the House of Chanel and the late Karl Lagerfeld since childhood due to her mother, Vanessa Paradis' status as a muse and ambassador for the Maison. Accompanying her mother to fittings in Paris and wearing her hand-me-downs from a young age, Depp finally became an official part of the Chanel family at just 16 years old when she fronted their 2015 eyewear campaign. The campaign made her the youngest-ever global Chanel ambassador.
In 2017, Depp walked the Spring Summer 2017 Haute Couture show as the Chanel bride, and has since starred in multiple campaigns for the House and been a constant front-row-fixture with her mother.
On her style...
Depp's style mirrors her heritage – straddling quintessential French-girl louche styles and the Californian feel of her Hollywood upbringing. Drenched in shades of pink, much tweed and many a Camellia flower from her Chanel influences, she's not afraid of a barely-there mini or a simple tank with a chunky heel. Her makeup looks are iconic all on their own, spawning thousands of Lily-Rose Depp makeup tutorials online, all attempting to perfect her signature pouty lip and black eyeliner look.
