Inspired by the idea of the ‘pursuit of happiness’ and the joy of happenstance during a time of global unrest. Lee Mathews showcases its Resort 2021 collection through a moving campaign shoot and film with dancers from the Sydney Experimental Arts Ensemble.
The Resort 2021 collection embodies a sense of joy and lightness. Creative Director Lee Mathews was inspired by the singing birds in the trees surrounding the brands Sydney headquarters during this unique time in the world. Stating in a press release, “Bird watching, birds flying and birdsong... all the planes stopped flying and all the birds starting singing again! It was so noticeable and impactful, as our workspace is surrounded by trees, everyone was talking about it.”
What emerged is a floaty and feminine collection with intricate detailing. From earthy tones to bright pops of colour and soft subdued prints. Relaxed tailoring meets a utilitarian workwear vibe with signature Lee Mathews silhouettes. An array of wearable pieces perfect for layering and ease of movement.
“The Resort 2021 Collection feels like a new way forward and a different way of looking at things, and I hope we can continue to make lovely things in our ‘brave new world’."
The campaign shoot and film was a collaboration between old friends and new. Collection stills were lensed by photographer and designer Martyn Thompson who also created the sets. Under the artistic direction of Eliza Cooper, dancers from the Sydney Experimental Arts Ensemble were shot by videographer Feras Shaheen performing their own movements and interpreting the collection in their own way.
Against a backdrop of pink-patched floating and painted walls, dancers Allie Graham, Mitchell Christie, Maxine Carlisle and Emma Grill move to their own rhythms with fluid movements and raw inhibitions to a delicate emotional score by composer Mason Peronchik. A story of optimism and communication – an imaginative romance between creative talents.
The Lee Mathews Resort 2021 collection will be available from this October.
