Laser hair removal has never been more accessible - or more tempting. The idea of not having to shave your legs ever again (if you choose to shave at all) is endlessly appealing.
For anyone and everyone out there that is considering laser hair removal, but has a few questions before they get started, we're here to help. We spoke an expert - Dr Jonathan Hopkirk, Laser Clinics Australia Global Medical Director. Dr Hopkirk answered every niggling question we've ever had about laser hair removal. Here's what you need to know.
What is laser hair removal and how does it work?
Laser hair removal is a medical-grade treatment that offers permanent hair reduction.
Laser hair removal benefits include:
- Permanent hair reduction
- Reduce ingrown hairs
- Safe and effective technology
- Convenient and cost-effective
- With every treatment, hair grows back thinner and lighter
The laser works by safely directing concentrated light into the hair follicle inhibiting the hair’s ability to grow without disrupting or damaging the skin’s surface. Our lasers use a wide beam which allows the removal of multiple hair follicles at the same time. This makes the treatment quick and very convenient.
Our experienced therapists will take your skin and hair type into account before creating a personalised treatment plan. A little bit on the technology, the Candela GentleLASE Pro is designed to work for clients with dark hair and lighter skin, while the GentleYAG Pro works best on a darker skin tone.
What can you expect to see after a session?
After your treatment, it is normal to experience warmth and redness that will feel and look similar to a mild sunburn, and potentially some swelling within the individual hair follicles.
Soothe any redness and sensitivity with Skinstitut Laser Aid, this will continue to draw heat out of the skin and keep the area cool and hydrated. Laser Aid can be applied liberally for 3-5 days or until the skin has returned to its pre-treatment state.
How long does laser hair removal last?
Laser hair removal is a form of permanent hair reduction, which means we aim to permanently reduce the amount of hair growing in a treated area by up to 90%. Due to genetics and hormonal influences, we can never guarantee 100% permanent removal.
After completion of your initial course, maintenance treatments are recommended to maintain your results. The time between these treatments can differ depending on the area and the individual. This is best discussed with one of our experienced therapists.
How long does a laser hair removal session take?
The length of each Laser Hair Removal session will depend on the area being treated. If you’re just popping in for underarms, your Brazilian, chin, lip etc. treatment time can be a few minutes. If you’re coming in for multiple treatment areas like our underarms, Brazilian & full legs package or our back & shoulders package (popular with our male clients) treatment time can take a little longer, around 30 minutes.
How many sessions will someone need to get effective results?
Depending on your hair and skin type and the area being treated, you will usually require treatments at four-six week intervals. Each part of the body has a different hair growing cycle, so the hair loss will vary depending on what phase your follicles are in at the time of treatment. However at least 10 treatments are required for optimum results.
Does laser hair removal work better for some people? Who are they?
Due to having multiple wavelengths to choose from, laser hair removal is indeed suitable and safe for all skin tones. In terms of hair colour, laser hair removal is best suited to individuals with dark hair. The current technology is attracted to melanin (the brown colour present in skin and hair). Red, grey/white or blonde hair colours do not produce enough pigment for the laser to recognise the hair.
Best results are generally seen with clients that have light skin and dark hair.
How do you prepare for laser hair removal?
Before your appointment, we ask that you shave the area between 12-24 hours prior to your treatment. Do not wax in the four weeks leading up to your appointment as pigment is required in the hair follicle for the laser to identify the hair and treatment to be effective. Avoid exposing the area to direct sunlight for two weeks prior to your treatment, always protect the skin with sunscreen and ensure no residue of fake tan is present on the skin.
Is there an average cost people can expect?
Laser hair removal starts at $12 and due to the benefits of permanent hair reduction, over time, Laser hair removal is the more cost effective option when compared to other hair removal methods like shaving and waxing. Not to mention it saves you a whole lot of time in the bathroom.
At Laser Clinics Australia, accessible beauty is at the core of our business which means you can always find a great deal on laser hair removal.
Can you get laser hair removal while pregnant?
There are no conclusive studies on laser being safe or unsafe for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Before proceeding with laser hair removal please consult your doctor.
Does laser hair removal hurt?
For new clients, often their concerns are around pain and how does laser hair removal actually feel? The most common sensations during treatment are warmth and a mild flicking sensation. Our experienced therapists will regularly check in with you to ensure you are comfortable throughout the treatment. It’s also important to note that all of our lasers feature a unique dynamic cooling device that helps to calm, soothe and protect the skin.
