Lanvin welcomes new artistic director Peter Copping

Lanvin, the oldest continually operating French couture House, has appointed Peter Copping as its new artistic director this week. He succeeds Loewe-alumni Bruno Sialelli, who joined the House in 2019.

The announcement marks a significant moment for the Maison, which has been a cornerstone of Parisian elegance since its founding by Jeanne Lanvin in 1889.

Who is Peter Copping?

You might not know his name, but Copping is certainly no fashion newcomer. A British national and graduate of Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art in London, he began his fashion career at Sonia Rykiel before spending over a decade at Louis Vuitton, working under Marc Jacobs as head of womenswear.

Copping later took on the role of creative director at Nina Ricci in Paris, and at Oscar de la Renta in New York. Notably, Mr. de la Renta, who had previously been a designer at Lanvin under Antonio Castillo, personally designated Copping as his successor.

Most recently, Copping served as head of couture at Balenciaga, where he directed the ateliers for the reintroduction of the couture collection, and subsequently as Head of VIP and Special Projects.

What is the history of Lanvin?

Jeanne Lanvin, the House's original founder, started her fashion journey by designing clothes for her daughter before this maternal inspiration quickly evolved into a successful business.

A favourite among the Parisian elite, the House became known for its intricate embroidery, luxurious fabrics, and feminine silhouettes, and for its most iconic and renowned piece, the "Lanvin robe de style", which was introduced in the 1920s by Jeanne Lanvin.

Characterised by its drop waist, full skirt, and intricate embellishments, often featuring lace, embroidery, and luxurious fabrics, the robe de style was a departure from the flapper styles of the time, offering an alternative that was both elegant and romantic. It remains a symbol of Lanvin's heritage and its dedication to exquisite craftsmanship and timeless elegance.

When will his debut collection be shown?

Copping's first collection for Lanvin is scheduled to be released during the upcoming Paris Fashion Week in September.
