Friends of Judy: Why the actress who gave us Dorothy was a style icon in her own right

Outside of her customary blue and white gingham and red slippers, and unspooling over 45 years is Judy Garland's legacy as a fashion powerhouse. Actress, singer, activist, and beloved queer icon Judy Garland has left an indelible mark on the world. In many ways, she has been the hallmark of feminine resilience from her earliest days prancing down the yellow brick road of one filmic masterpiece. You might know it as 'The Wizard of Oz'.

In addition to a career that paved the way in musical theatre and film, Garland's own wardrobe was also stock-full of imagination and heightened glamour. She favoured puff-sleeves and floral prints. She was not shy to a rhinestone, or a bead, or a sequin. Garland's legacy captured diversity over the years, and her stylings are the blueprint for many who crossed over from Old Hollywood to the big stage. Now, travel back in time with us. We're taking you through the technicolour world of Judy Garland's fashion repertoire.

A puff-sleeved, salmon-pink cardigan over a starch-white collar. We need it yesterday.

The entire back-vault of costumes is pictured here from the 'Wizard of Oz' set. MGM sold it all: including that gingham number.

We are completely enraptured by this little drummer girl outfit. And the fur pouf on her head and cuffing the hem is just what we need in time for winter.

Before there was Pearl, there was Judy.

Judy Garland and Fred Astaire. This floor-length gown in white is screaming grace. Grace Kelly, to be precise.

Tapping her way through the 1930s through Salvatore Ferragamo’s now iconic Rainbow Shoes designed exclusively for Garland.

A boat-neck hat and the peter-pan collar is... dare we say, twee?

In her later years, Garland's style evolved from the sweet-cheeked femininity to more of a stately, First Lady sensibility. It's a power move.

An incredible rotation of bonnets and hats. We can't pick a favourite.

Garland is a picture-perfect vision on her wedding day, with Vincente Minelli. The sheer nurse-cap is a stroke of masterful genius. Oh-so chic.

Garland looks resplendent in red. I'd wear this plunging sweetheart number to my own debutante ball.
