The fashionable changing of the guards continues, and this time, it's John Galliano leaving Maison Margiela.
The British designer is set to exit the brand after ten years, taking to Instagram to share the momentous news. “Today is the day I say goodbye to Maison Margiela,” he wrote to his 1.6 million Instagram followers.
The designer went on to thank “two truly beautiful people whom I both love and cherish”— the label’s founder, Martin Margiela, and Renzo Rosso, the chairman of international fashion group, Only The Brave.
The heartfelt post continued, with Galliano writing, I celebrate the genderless collections we now produce, reinforced by how they are bought and supported. My co-ed collections, whether Artisinal or RTW, represent diversity and individuality."
“I celebrate the magical relationships with my muses, who challenge me to create safe places where we can dream and make believe."
John Galliano became the creative director of Margiela in 2014, marking his return to fashion after his controversial departure from Dior in 2011. Since taking the helm at Margiela, Galliano has elevated the iconic brand into even greater prominence, winning over both fashion and art enthusiasts.
“Working with John was one of the most significant and impactful experiences of my life," said Renzo Rosso in a statement today. "He mentored me and showed me his vision, enriching me culturally and allowing me to bring some of that vision and culture to the rest of the Group. I feel privileged to have worked with two legends like Martin [Margiela] and John. Martin made this house a reference and an icon, John made it the most cutting-edge couture house in the world.”
As for where he will go next? The designer didn't share any concrete details, however he promised there will be an announcement soon. “The rumours…Everyone wants to know and everyone wants to dream. When the time is right, all will be revealed,” he wrote. "For now, I take this time to express my immense gratitude. I continue to atone and will never stop dreaming.”
