As the Fall-Winter 2021 season of fashion month closes out, it is evident through the collections and beyond that what we've all been yearning for is a sense of comfort. Reimagining the way we live and the way we dress to accommodate how truly want to be. Safe in expression, swaddled in reassurance, fashion at large has tapped into our desire to feel as though our clothes are on our side, and who better to deliver in sentiment than husband and wife duo Lucie and Luke Meiers of Jil Sander for their Fall Winter 2021 collection.
The famously minimalist Maison steers away from classic Sander motifs and nods in the direction of heirloom pieces for FW21. Classically streamlined silhouettes with an emphasis on clean lines and restraint are intercepted with pearl vests, floral embroidery, retro prints and bauble bags. Something of the past reimagines with the intention of injecting joy and playfulness back into our wardrobes.
Leaning on prints, colour and craft, Jil Sander's Fall Winter 2021 is an unexpected move for the brand, but a welcome one nonetheless. Between thigh-high leather boots and gloves are iterations of warmth and nostalgia. Raw-edged textiles meet buttons at the back of jackets, Milanese prints and tones point to 70s references while classic silk slip dresses look to lingerie with the addition of lace, fringe hems the bottoms of dresses and spills from underneath jackets. Memories mix with minimalism as Sander welcomes warmth back into the collection.
The collection release comes with the news that Jil Sander will be joining some of the greats with the sale of the brand to Only the Brave, which is owned by Diesel founder Renzo Rosso, and among the ranks includes John Galliano’s Maison Margiela and Francesco Risso’s Marni.
