These new releases from IWC Schaffhausen are all we can think about

For those keeping up in the world of horology, you'll know that Watches & Wonders Shanghai just completed its 2024 convention. And – as always – the calibre of new releases exceeded expectations. One watchmaker that undoubtedly catches our attention at every convention and with every new release is IWC Schaffhausen – the leading Swiss luxury watch manufacturer with more than 150 years of history, yet is tirelessly committed to innovation. So, it will come as no surprise to anyone that their latest releases have caught the attention of many.

Intrinsic to the IWC Schaffhausen’s DNA is its ability to blend traditional craftsmanship with modern sensibilities. From its lineup at Watches & Wonders Shanghai 2024, there were two pieces in particular that had us talking – the Portofino Automatic Moon Phase 37 Year of the Snake and Portofino Chronograph 39. Whether it’s the celestial charm of the Portofino Automatic Moon Phase 37 or the sleek sophistication of the Portofino Chronograph 39, both timepieces offer something truly special – a nod to the past with a firm gaze set on the future. Below, we take a deeper look at the new releases from IWC Schaffhausen’s offering at Watches & Wonders Shanghai 2024.

The Portofino Automatic Moon Phase 37 – Year of the Snake

There’s something innately poetic about the moon phase complication, and with IWC Schaffhausen’s latest release, the Portofino Automatic Moon Phase 37 Year of the Snake, the brand leans into this allure. With a sense of mysticism and sophistication, this timepiece celebrates not just technical mastery, but the cultural resonance of the Lunar New Year.

Marking the year of the Wood Snake, this edition intertwines Chinese symbolism with horological craftsmanship. The 37mm stainless steel case houses a striking burgundy dial, a deep, passionate shade representing the fire traditionally used to welcome the Lunar New Year. The moon phase sits at 12 o’clock, like a watchful eye, precise to the point that it deviates from the actual orbit by just one day every 122 years. This elegance is paired with golden moon and star elements that seem to dance against the rich red backdrop, adding a layer of ethereal beauty to the watch’s aesthetic.

But what really sets this watch apart isn’t just its beauty but its underlying meaning. The snake, a symbol of wisdom, transformation, and rebirth, plays a crucial role in the watch’s narrative. This is expertly captured in the gold-plated oscillating mass shaped like a snake – visible through the sapphire case back, a nod to the Lunar New Year’s cultural and spiritual significance.

Design meets function with the versatility of the two calfskin straps – one in a rich burgundy that matches the dial and the other in black. Whether worn as a celebration piece or a daily companion, the quick-change strap system ensures adaptability. Powering the timepiece is the IWC-manufactured 32800 calibre with automatic winding and a five-day power reserve, a testament to the brand’s commitment to precision and endurance.

The Portofino Chronograph 39 – Stainless Steel Bracelet

The second release that caught our attention was the Portofino Chronograph 39 – a timepiece that represents a seamless balance between timeless elegance and contemporary flair. IWC Schaffhausen has taken the already beloved Portofino silhouette and added a chronograph complication that offers a sporty edge without sacrificing the minimalist charm the collection is known for.

At 39mm, the case strikes the perfect balance between bold and refined. The stainless steel case, polished to perfection, mirrors the same versatility and sophistication that have made the Portofino collection a staple since its debut in 1984. Its silver-plated dial, framed by rhodium-plated hands and appliques, captures a sense of understated luxury. Every element feels intentionally placed, with Roman numerals and simple hour markers creating an aesthetic that is classic yet current.

This year’s refresh brings an exciting new detail to the forefront: for the first time, the Portofino Chronograph 39 comes with a stainless steel five-link bracelet. There’s a robustness to it, yet the bracelet exudes a refined charm that elevates the watch’s overall appearance. Its fluid design contours to the wrist with ease, ensuring both style and comfort. For those looking for flexibility, the integrated quick-change system allows wearers to switch to a leather strap, transforming the look and feel of the timepiece to suit any occasion.

Beyond the impeccable design, the watch is powered by the IWC-manufactured 69355 calibre. This robust movement, composed of 205 individual parts, ensures the precise measurement of time with a chronograph function capable of recording stop times up to 30 minutes. A classic column-wheel design enhances its efficiency and precision, while the bi-directional pawl winding system builds a 46-hour power reserve, making it as reliable as it is beautiful.

Whether worn with the stainless steel bracelet for a bold look or paired with traceable Swiss calf leather for a softer approach, the Portofino Chronograph 39 is the epitome of versatility. It’s a timepiece that moves with you, adapting to the multitudes of your lifestyle.
