We all knew the time would probably come, but we just didn't know it would be so damn soon.
Our favourite musical trio Boygenius have announced that they will be parting ways after a breakthrough year, releasing their Grammy nominated album The Record, and subsequent four-track EP The Rest in October (you can see a full list of today's 2024 Grammy winners here). In such a short amount of time, they've already managed to play huge shows at Coachella, appear as the musical guests on SNL next to Timothée Chalamet, and win over the love of millions of fans through their dry humour and on-stage hijinks.
The supergroup, made up of singers Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus, told fans at their secret acoustic Los Angeles show on Thursday 1 February that it would be their last, and that they were planning to put an indefinite stop on their band activities (likely to concentrate once more on their solo musical endeavours).
“This is our last show, and we’re feeling it," said Dacus in videos released from the evening, before saying that they would be "going away for the foreseeable future". (Julien Baker chimed in to correct: “Not ever.”)
A representative for Boygenius confirmed to media that the trio will be stepping back, as the group indicated on stage, but there hasn't been any definitive news about whether they might not regroup in a couple more years' time (the band initially formed in 2018, and regrouped in 2023).
The news has obviously sent ripples through their fan base, but while the boys might be moving on, their fans certainly aren't ready to do so just yet. So, we thought we'd bring together some of our favourite internet reactions to the Boygenius break up announcement so far.
