Sitting at the core of health, wellness and – let’s be honest, decadence too, choosing a place to stay in Byron can be a task. There are so many places to visit, to try, and don’t forget – you’re there to rest too. On a trip to the Northern Rivers recently I realised my ultimate itinerary is having some time in town for the first part of a stay before making my way out into the hinterland. This offers the best of both worlds; a few nights in Byron Bay were (only just) enough time to try the incredible food and great shopping, while still getting to enjoy a soft landing in the Northern Rivers.

Enter 28 Degrees, an adult-only 5-star guesthouse footsteps from the town centre. Created by interior designer and owner Deb Garske, she set out to create a sanctuary that was close to everything but feels a world away once you walk through its doors. There are personal plunge pools, Iranian bathroom tiles and local beeswax candles – every element feels considered.

Each room is meticulously curated with the intention of providing a space to reset and rest. I started my days with a walk to the lighthouse before returning to my room for an in-room massage. Later I would walk into town to stop by local café High Life and visit some favourite shops like Nagnata and Venroy. It’s also situated a stones-throw from Bar Heather – take your time to dawdle along to get there for dinner after an afternoon under the palm trees.

Opening in 2022, 28 Degrees feels like a family home mixed with a resort – a personal favourite touch being granola left at your door each morning. The bed was an instant sleep remedy, the furniture fresh with a Hamptons feeling. The perfect space to create a retreat of your own – or to indulge in an artist’s retreat, as curated by the founder. There are no TVs, which are replaced by books instead. Unwind and return to yourself here, all the while being within walking distance of the ocean, and all the spots you’ve had on your to-do list in Byron.
