According to Paris Fashion Week, the bubble skirt has officially been dethroned as Spring Summer ‘25’s most coveted silhouette. Taking its place? Introducing the hourglass dress, a sleeker, slightly more grown up take on the voluminous skirt trend. Even better, unlike some of the more avant garde trends that have materialised on runways this season, the hourglass dress du jour contours and cinches in all the right place, meaning it’s actually wearable and flattering. Allow us to get you acquainted.
The hourglass dress took several forms on this season's runways. At Balmain, creative director Oivier Rousteing brought geometric lines into sharp focus, riffing on retro ‘80s power dressing via mini dresses that hugged the waist, then jutted out at the hips at exaggerated angles. Mugler followed suit, with models taking to the runway in rigid peplum-style minis that expertly curved around their figures. If you couldn’t quite get on board with fashion’s attempt at a full-blown peplum revival, perhaps Mugler’s new dresses are a fair compromise?
With event season fast-approaching (yes, really), we’re looking to Loewe for wardrobe inspiration. Jonathan Anderson’s take on the hourglass trend was decidedly more whimsical. The designer played with proportions to produce ultra-high-cut mini dresses fitted with surreal, doll-like skirts. And, adding to the playfulness of it all, many of the styles were completely covered in sequins in bright, childlike hues. At Acne Studios, it wasn’t just dresses that received the hourglass treatment. In addition to sleek, wearable LBDs, trousers and jeans followed a similar curvature, cinching in at models waists before ballooning into an exaggerated wide leg.
