You know Award Season is well and truly here when the nominations come flying in. This morning we woke up to a list of the Golden Globes 2024 nominations – and the aftershocks of Barbenheimer are clearly still being felt.
Greta Gerwig's Barbie has dominated the list with nine nominations in total, and the director is in the running for Best Director along with the likes of Martin Scorsese, Celine Song, Christopher Nolan, Yorgos Lanthimos, and Bradley Cooper – but sadly no Sofia Coppola. Barbie's soundtrack was also praised, with three nods for songs by Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, and Ryan Gosling's I'm Just Ken. Meanwhile, Olivia Rodrigo's original song for The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes was snubbed despite the singer being widely acknowledged for producing one of the best albums of the year.
Elsewhere, RUSSH favourites such as Past Lives, Poor Things, All of Us Strangers, and Priscilla were recognised. Along with beloved TV series like Succession and The Bear, where the principal cast members all received nominations. Lily Gladstone has rightfully scored a nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture for her bewitching performance in Killers of the Flower Moon – and is the first Indigenous nominee in this category. Charles Melton has a nabbed a mention for his career-making performance in May December, while Timothée Chalamet snuck in for his work in Wonka. Meanwhile, Hayao Miyazaki's final animated film The Boy and the Heron is the most convincing contender for Best Animated Picture.
