As if it never left, awards season is back in (almost) full swing. After being delayed for almost two months due to the pandemic, the winners of the 2021 Golden Globe Awards have finally been revealed.
While much of this year's proceedings were still rolled out virtually, the 2021 nominees lineup has stuck true to tradition in one major way – through its controversial list of nominees. Although this year's list marked a historical year of recognition for female directors, the Hollywood Foreign Press' decision was met with public outrage over the noticeable snub of several groundbreaking performances and productions. The most questionable of them all of course, was the absence of Michaela Coel's I May Destroy You.
Although we certainly can't change the past, we can – and still should – celebrate the incredible achievements of this year's successful winners. After much discussion over the lack of recognition for deserving Black-led productions in the 2021 Golden Globe nominees list, the first two winners of the night were two Black British actors: Daniel Kaluuya for Judas and the Black Messiah and John Boyega for Small Axe.
A deeply moving win, actor Chadwick Boseman posthumously won the award for best performance by an actor in a motion picture – drama, for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. His role as Levee alongside Viola Davis was his final film before he passed away from stage 4 colon cancer in August last year. His wife, Simone Ledward Boseman, accepted the award on his behalf.

The formidable Jane Fonda was also announced as this year's Cecil B. DeMille award recipient; the honoury award bestowed for outstanding contribution to the world of entertainment. Although Fonda is the 68th recipient in the award's history, she is only the 16th female recipient.
