FKA Twigs knows how to spark joy with the skateboarding video she has directed

fka twigs longboard family

Thank you, FKA Twigs, for this small dose of joy in a depraved world! The singer/songwriter/creative queen has directed a video for skateboarders -  specifically, longboarders, and the short film, titled Longboard family, it features seasoned skateboarders pirouetting on their long boards.

This year, for the 2020 Olympic Games, skateboarding became an official sport, with it 13-year-old Momiji Nishiya from Japan became the first ever woman to win gold at the Games for the sport, so please excuse us while we become obsessed with skateboarding for a moment. FKA Twigs, has tapped into this energy, with a two-minute film that celebrates a community of dancers who appear to glide on their longboards while performing fluid dance moves. Set to the soundtrack of Brent Faiyaz’s “Dead Man Walking”, Longboard family features longboard champions Aboubakry SeckGiu AlfeoMarina Correia, and Brandon DesJarlais as they twist and twirl together on their boards, to a moodily lit backdrop.

"I had the honour of directing this dance video about the longboard community and how they have used a facebook group to share moves and grow their longboard family." Twigs wrote on Instagram when she released the video, which she produced for Facebook, obvious in the captions that appeared on-screen beside the skateboarders - comments on their skills, a display of the way skateboarding communities can grow online. “It was so amazing being immersed into their world and as a movement artist and obsessor myself, I felt humbled by the skill levels and beautiful athletes that I shot.”

We ave been loving Twigs position in the director's chair of late, with her work on her own Don’t Judge Me and Holy Terrain music videos, it is exciting to see her in the drivers seat, and we look forward to seeing what she does next. Namely, the martial arts TV series that the singer, dancer, and producer is working on with Michaela Coel.
