‘Pose’ star Mj Rodriguez makes Emmy’s history as the first openly transgender woman to be nominated for a major category

Emmy nominations 2021

The 2021 Emmy award nominations have officially been announced; confirming that our obsession with royal affairs (mainly, our beloved Princess Di) has never been stronger.

As was to be expected, hit Netflix series, The Crown, secured a total of 24 nominations – a number that could only be matched by Disney+‘s The Mandalorian. Other prominent and close leaders to watch for the 73rd annual award ceremony include Hulu's harrowing series, The Handmaid's Tale, and Marvel and Disney+‘s Wandavision. For those anticipating that Bridgerton would have made a major mark on this year's nominations, you may be disappointed to learn that it only appeared in two categories; Best Drama Series, and a nomination for Regé-Jean Page in Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

The real cause for celebration in the 2021 Emmy nominations is for Pose star, Mj Rodriguez; who has made history as the first openly transgender woman to be nominated for a major category in the award show's history. Rodriguez up for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal of Blanca Evangelista. Responding to the news of her nomination on Instagram Live, she shared; “This goes [to] my Black community, my Latina community, my Latino community, my trans community, and my women who have been fighting since day one—this is for us."

The 2021 Emmy Awards will take place later this year on September 19. To find out whether your favourite actor, series or film made the cut, scroll through the full list of 2021 Emmy nominations below.
