Emma Mackey has been hast as Emily Brontë in a new biopic about the Wuthering Heights writer. Premiering at the Toronto Film Festival, the first trailer for the film has dropped and we’re excited to see Brontë’s undulating-yet-whimsical story come to life on the big screen.
What is the plot of Emily?
Emily takes us on a semi-imagined journey through the life of the renowned author, showing us how Brontë finds her voice and produces an array of her literary classics. The film also explores relationships that helped inspire her work, such as her sisterhood with Charlotte (Alexandra Dowling) and Anne (Amelia Gething), alongside her first love, Weightman (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) and her brother (Fionn Whitehead). Alongside the main cast, we also see Gemma Jones and Adrian Dunbar rounding out the ensemble, with the picture directed by Frances O’Connor in her directorial debut.
The trailer opens with Brontë being asked how she wrote Wuthering Heights, followed by a montage of moments ranging from happy to confronting. We see her begin to contemplate a career in writing rather than academia in a trailer laden with whimsy and intrigue. You can watch it below.
Mackey has had a busy year when it comes to filmmaking and premieres outside of the Emily Brontë film. Currently, she is working on the technicolour-drenched Barbie film with Margot Robbie, Ryan Reynolds and directed by Greta Gerwig. We’ve of course also seen her in Sex Education and her 2020 film Eiffel appears to be re-releasing across the world after an initial release in Australia at the French Film Festival in early 2021.
When is Emily releasing in Australia?
An Australian release date for the film is yet to be announced, however it will release in the English fall later this year, leading us to believe it may hit our shores in the months following – perhaps as a literary Boxing Day offering?
